Golf Monthly is the market leading golfing magazine in the UK. It's a lively and welcoming read that is targeted at good golfers who are regular players - and keen to get even better.
With over 100 years of heritage and authority behind it, it represents the real 'voice of golf' with leading columnists, top players and unrivalled coverage of equipment and instruction.
The European and PGA Tour amalgamate this week and head to Scotland and the Tom Doak designed Renaissance Club in North Berwick, nestled between Muirfield and Archerfield. Tom said of the land he was given to work with “To work in Scotland is a dream for any golf architect. The property for The Renaissance Club is unexpected, with sandy soils and windy conditions, combined with a variety of woods, gentle hills and open links, will give us the chance to build a special golf course with a character all its own.”
The word tough is mentioned quite a lot when it comes to The Renaissance Club that opened for play in 2008, the club has since acquired some land from the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers to build three new holes and brings some wonderful views of the Firth of Forth.
The course is relatively flat with plenty of fairway undulations but it’s the greens and their many contours that make being in the correct section of the green very important when playing your approach shot.
The course really kicks into gear at the seventh as you head out towards the shore and the newer holes. The 8th is the hardest hole on the course with the green sitting next to one of the many drystone walls that permeate the course. Measuring 7,300 yards from the tips with lots of very long carries to reach the fairway if the wind is up this week it will be a beast of a test for the players.
TV while be showing a lot of the new holes and the pick of the bunch is the 10th which doglegs around the cliffs and offers some fantastic views. The longer hitters will be relishing this risk and reward hole, but anything left and its 3-off the tee.
My tips to Win:
No surprise that I am going with Scottie Scheffler 5/1 with SpreadEx who is using this week in preparation for The Open, but I am sure he would love adding The Scottish Open to his ever growing list of wins
I know that this is an event Tommy Fleetwood 25/1 with BetVictor loves playing in and he has also lost in a play-off to one of my other picks this week Aaron Rai. Since the tournament has moved to The Renaissance Club, Tommy has only been outside the Top 26 once in his five starts and has two other Top 6 finishes
This week's defending champion is Robert MacIntyre 33/1 with PaddyPower and who could forget those emotional scenes on the 18th green last year. Bob also had a runner-up the year before and comes into this week on the back of four Top 20 finishes from his last five starts including his runner-up finish at a very tough US Open
Each-way tips:
As I said early Aaron Rai 60/1 with BetVictor is another past champion of this event, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a play-off, he also had a Top 5 finish here last year. It has been a bit of a rollercoaster year for Aaron on the PGA Tour, but he has four Top 20 finishes from his last six starts and should be looking forward to being back here this week, with those positive memories
A win earlier this year and a runner-up finish at the PGA Championship should see Harris English 66/1 with PaddyPower arrive in Scotland in buoyant mood. Harris had a Top 5 finish in his last start at the Travelers Championship firing all four rounds in the 60s and a final round of 65. English has played in this event twice before and made the cut, but I feel this year he will put in a challenge
Outside tip:
I think it is only a matter of time before Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen 100/1 with QuinnBet notches up his first European Tour victor and came close with his runner-up finish earlier in the year in the Qatar Masters. I think his twelfth-place finish at the US Open has given him a lot of confidence and I feel he will do well here this week
