The European Tour is back and now moves to South Africa and pitches up at Randpark Golf Club. The course opened for play during the 1960s and has seen many changes with Sid Brews adding a 18-hole layout when land was purchased next to their Windsor Park course. Mark Muller was commissioned to redesign the greens in preparation to hosting the 1995 and 2000 South African Open.

The Firethorn course was redesign in 2015 by Sean Quinn, seven new holes were constructed, with new greens, bunkers were modified and given flash fronted faces. The 18th was changed from a short par five to a brut of a par 4 weighing in at 504-yards.

On the front nine the old par 3, 2nd was removed and replaced with a dogleg right par 5 to the 3rd green. Three holes on the old outward nine (6, 7 and 8) were also replaced by four new holes that run counter-clockwise to the original routing.

My tips to Win:

It took a long time for Louis Oosthuizen 11/2 – with BetFair – to finally get his hands on the South African Open trophy and I can’t see him letting it go lightly. Louis played fourteen events on the European Tour last year – including cosanctioned tournaments – and only finished outside the Top 25 three times

I did say Erik Van Rooyen 10/1 – with SportingBet – would win on the European Tour last year, which he did but I also expected him to win at least two events. I am sure he will be looking to get off to a quick start this year and what better way than to start in his home Open Championship.

There have been several years when Branden Grace 14/1 – with SportingBet – has missed playing in this event and I wonder if it is anything to do with frustration, wanting to win his home Open. Branden has several Top 10s, a Top 5 and a runner-up finish in this tournament and I am sure like his compatriot Oosthuizen, he is desperate to add his name to the illustrious list of great South African golfers who have won one of the oldest championships in the world.

Each-way tips:

Another South African golfer who has a runner-up finish in this event is George Coetzee 33/1 – with Coral – back in 2012, but it’s the only time that he has really challenged, but something that I feel he will be looking to do this week.

Another player who has a runner-up finish in this event is Christiaan Bezuidenhout 35/1 – with UniBet – who missed out by two shots firing a final round 67 in 2016. Christiaan missed the cut here last year, but I feel it’s a very different player that will be teeing it up this year after he finally won his maiden European Tour event back in July at the Andalucía Masters.

Outside Tip:

Daniel Van Tonder 125/1 – with UniBet – currently leads the Sunshine Tours Order of merit and has a win and five other Top 10 finishes. Daniel started well in this event last year when it was held over the Randpark Golf Club track, but fell away in the final two rounds. I am sure with his experience he has gained this year leading the OOM I expect him to be more consistent and if that’s the case these could turn out to be very good odds.

Longer odds:

Try Darren Fichardt 200/1 – with SpreadEX

As always good luck
