Golf Monthly is the market leading golfing magazine in the UK. It's a lively and welcoming read that is targeted at good golfers who are regular players - and keen to get even better.
With over 100 years of heritage and authority behind it, it represents the real 'voice of golf' with leading columnists, top players and unrivalled coverage of equipment and instruction.
The European Tour now moves from Denmark to the UK and to the venue that basically changed the history of the modern-day Ryder Cup matches. The Brabazon course has hosted four Ryder Cups and Europe has won two, halved one and lost one and is a firm favourite for European spectators, but it was the 1985 matches here when Europe finally turned the tide of American domination in the biannual event.
The Brabazon opened for play in 1977 with a match between Seve Ballesteros and Johnny Miller against Tony Jacklin and Brian Barnes and how poetic that it was Seve and Jacklin who played that opening match as they would go on to become entwined in the Belfry’s history.
The course was designed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas who were given an unremarkable piece of farmland, which required significant sculpting to turn it into a golf course and it’s also its downfall as when it rains it can turn back into a bit of farmland becoming very muddy and boggy in places. In the late 90s Dave Thomas was commissioned to give the course a £2.7m makeover to try and help solve some of those problems and it has helped, but unfortunately not totally solved them. There is now more water on The Brabazon than just about any other inland course in the UK.
The memorable holes are of course the 10th and 18th holes, the 10th being a risk and reward par 4 with the green being protected by water and who can forget Seve driving that green and of course Christy O’Connors 2-iron into the heart of the triple-tiered 18th green to win the 1985 Ryder Cup matches.

My tips to Win:
The first of three players I am going to stick with this week is Rasmus Højgaard 25/1 – with UniBet – and I am sure he will have been disappointed with the way he fell away after getting off to such a great start at the Danish Golf Championship. But Rasmus is coming back to the venue where he won during the COVID lockdown, and I am sure those positive memories will help him get back on track this week
The winner of this event two years ago was Thorbjørn Olesen 28/1 – with BetVictor – who defended his title last year with a Top 15 finish. Thorbjørn started this year with a win and a Top 10 finish on the European Tour, before heading over to the PGA Tour where things didn’t really go to plan. But I feel being back here and getting acclimatised last week in his homeland, I expect him to be challenging again this week.
Each-way tips:
Another player I am sticking with this week is Frederic Lacroix 40/1 – with SportingIndex – I don’t normally tip a player the week after they have just won because of the mental energy that they drain when in contention in the final round. But Frederic has been playing leading up to his win and he has played some solid golf in this event over the last two years
It is hard not to tip local lad Andy Sullivan 50/1 – with BetVictor – who comes from Nuneaton which is not too far down the road. Andy has had two Top 15 finishes and a missed cut since this event returned to The Belfry and also a Top 10 during the COVID event held here. It has been a stop start year for Sullivan but playing in front of home support I feel will give him that extra push this week
After two runner-up finishes and a Top 5 Joe Dean 66/1 – with Bet365 – seemed to go slightly off the boil, but there were signs that he was coming back into form at The Open Championship where he had a Top 25 finish. A solid final round of 67 at the Danish Golf Championship see Joe storm up the leaderboard and into the Top 5 and I am sure he will be looking forward to playing back in front of a partisan crowd this week
Outside tip:
And the final player that I will be sticking with this week is Lucas Bjerregaard 100/1 – with UniBet – after his runner-up finish at the Danish Golf Championship. That finish made it his fourth Top 10 finish in his last four starts and his sixth Top 15 finish in his last seven starts on both the challenge and European Tours
At the moment Brandon Robinson Thompson is on the reserve list, but if he does make it into the tournament, I think he is on a good run of form at the moment and depending what odds he comes in at, he will definitely be worth looking at
