Golf Monthly is the market leading golfing magazine in the UK. It's a lively and welcoming read that is targeted at good golfers who are regular players - and keen to get even better.
With over 100 years of heritage and authority behind it, it represents the real 'voice of golf' with leading columnists, top players and unrivalled coverage of equipment and instruction.
For the first time since 2019 the RBC Canadian Open is back on the PGA Tour schedule and will be played at the Stanley Thompson designed St Georges Golf & Country Club, formally known as The Royal York Golf Club. The course was scheduled to be used for the 2020 Canadian Open, but due to the COVID pandemic it had to be cancelled.
The course was part of the Royal York Hotel which was developed in 1909 by Robert Home Smith and in 1927 he decided the hotel would benefit from offering its clients access to a golf course and Canadian golf course designer Stanley Thompson was duly commissioned to design and construct an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole course on the adjacent lands.
Thompson handpicked the site for the course from two thousand acres of property owned by Home Smith. “Thompson took full advantage of the natural contours and wooded valleys to make every hole of exceptional golfing character”, Baxter Dobell wrote in the 1932 edition of Golf and Sports Illustrated.
Robbie Robinson undertook a redesign of the course between 1965 and 1967 in preparation for the Canadian Open in 1968, lengthening a number of holes. Since then, Carrick has constructed a new green at the 10th, added various new tees and built new practice facilities for the club. In 2001 a bunker restoration programme was undertaken by Ian Andrew.
In 2014 there were further changes, the 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th and 15th holes were renovated to match the original greens, with the most significant change being the restoration of the original 3rd hole back to its Stanley Thompson configuration. The club continues to restore a few more original bunkers each year and has undertaken a massive tree removal program to address issues of sunlight and to open up the landscape.
Weighing in at just over 7,000 yards from the tips and with a par of 71, St George’s really is a serious challenge, especially coming down the stretch. The 17th and 18th which were both par 5, are now tough par fours, the 17th is a tight hole measuring 486 yards and has a crowned green, the 18th is just as tough at 465 yards and played uphill to a steep, heavily bunkered green.

No surprise that Scottie Scheffler 9/1 – with Bet365 – is favourite again this week, the only surprise for Scottie since the Phoenix Open is that he missed the cut at the PGA Championship but typically came out in this next event and only lost in a play-off to my next tip.
After a weeks rest from his play-off win against Scheffler, Sam Burns 16/1 – with 10Bet – is back and it could quite conceivably come down to another shootout between Burns and Scheffler this week. The pair between them have won six of the eleven events they have competed in since the Phoenix Open. Sam competing in the Valspar which Scheffler didn’t and won it and Scottie competing in the WGC match -play which Burns didn’t and winning it! Sam has three wins on the wraparound season a runner-up and three other Top 10s
My pick to break this duopoly is Tyrrell Hatton 33/1 – with UniBet – who has had a runner-up this year at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and has only been outside the Top 26 twice and he is due another challenge and I feel this course will suit him this week.
Each-way tips:
After a tough start to this years wraparound season things have started to settle down for Tony Finau 30/1 – with SportNation – with two Top 5 finishes in his last four starts with one of those being a runner-up at the Mexico Open which I feel gave Tony the kick he needed to get things back on track. I think these odds will change pretty rapidly so I would get on him pretty quick if he is still on them by the time you see them.
After a weeks rest Sebastián Muñoz 50/1 – with UniBet – should be raring to go again this week. Sebastián won his first PGA Tour event on the wraparound season that COVID struck and while he has had some good finishes and just missed out on a 59 last month he will be looking to get that second tour victory asap and in his current form this could be a good week for the Columbian to do that.
Outside tip:
It has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride to Aaron Rai 140/1 – with SportNation – first season on the PGA Tour, but there has certainly been some good signs, but it’s just putting four rounds together, he seems to get off to a good start and then fade away in the third or fourth round. Aaron had a solid Memorial Tournament and just missed out on a Top 25 finish, but I think he will be back this week and hopefully at these odds he can put four good rounds together to get himself right in the mix come Sunday
