Mid-September and we are only just playing the second Major Championship of the year and still have one more to come, it certainly has been a memorable and forgettable year.

The US Open Championship returns to New York and Winged Foot Golf Club, which last held the US Open back in 2006 when Australian Geoff Ogilvy took the title beating Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk and Colin Montgomerie by one shot.

The course was designed by AW Tillinghast and founded in 1921 and opened for play in 1923 with membership being by invitation only. The founders of the club come from the New York Athletic Club when some of their members decided to build a golf course, with the name coming from the NYAC’s logo, although the golf club has no formal links with the Athletic Club.

The US Open will be played over the West Course which weighs in at 7,264 yards, there is also the East Course which measures 6,750 yards. Gil Hanse was commissioned in 2016 to make improvements and restore the West Course in preparation for this event.

Hanse has restored some of the original bunkering and reclaimed greens back to their original sizes which are the defining characteristics of Winged Foot. Most of greens tilt from back to front, so where the players place their approach shots will be key this week.

Tom Doak once said of Winged Foot “There is nothing unique about the contour or the scenery; it seems like you ought to be able to build a course just like it on any good parkland site, yet no one has. It’s a clay soil counterpart to Pinehurst #2: the architecture from fifty yards in and including the greens is amazing, although the topography isn’t.”

The first green gives you a taste of what is to come, it’s a tilting, sloping vast expanse, the fairways are tight and the rough is deep but it isn’t an unfair challenge and will produce a worthy winner come Sunday evening.

My tips to Win:

To Come

As always good luck
