| The PGA Tour now moves to the Santa Monica Mountains in California and the Jack Nicklaus designed Sherwood Country Club that used to host the Chevron World Challenge tournament hosted by Tiger Woods, before it became the Hero World Championship and moved to the Bahamas.
Sherwood Country Club sits in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, a few miles to the southwest of the city of Thousand Oaks, which was home to the Chumash Native Americans before the area was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in the 16th century, when as you can imagine their home was destroyed to make way for “progress”.
The course opened for play in 1989 and sitting in the Santa Monica Mountains there is an abundance of stunning panoramas, dramatic elevation changes, mature trees, brooks and waterfalls. The courses signature hole is the par 3, 6th measuring 186-yards, the players are greeted by 14 waterfalls cascading through a series of seven pools as they stand on the tee, which protect the shallow green that rests at the base of Sherwood's beautiful mountains.
The back nine descends from the clubhouse down to Lake Sherwood and the oldest man-made lake in California before winding back into the foothills for the closing holes with both the 17th and 18th giving the “Signature hole” a run for its money. First up is the par 3, 17th hole measuring 232-yards that is played downhill where you have to carry a forest of trees to a sloping green. The 18th – which Jack Nicklaus himself declared to be one of the best finishing holes he’d ever designed – the tee shot is blind and played over a hill, the approach shot is played to a tiered green that is framed by a waterfall and bunker on the left, a rock wall and water across the front, and a pot bunker on the right.

My tips to Win:
One advantage Webb Simpson 20/1 – with BetFair – will have over a lot of the field this week is the fact he has played in a few of the World Challenge events that were held here and had three Top 15 finishes which included seventh and fifth place finishes and in his current form I think he will be right in the thick of it come Sunday afternoon.
Fresh from his excursion to secure his place in the Race to Dubai on the European Tour and taking third place at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth is Patrick Reed 22/1 – with SportingBet – who also had a Top 15 finish at the US Open and after a week’s rest I am sure he will be looking forward to challenging here this week.
Each-way tips:
I am going to stick with Harris English 35/1 – with BetFred – as I did think the Shriners Hospital Open missed cut was a blip and I think he showed with his Top 10 finish @ Shadown Creek that his golf game is in good shape and six years has been too long a wait to add to his two PGA Tour victories
Three Top 25 finishes from his first three starts on the new wraparound season shows Joaquin Niemann 40/1 – with UniBet – is in great form and his sixth-place finish at the CJ Cup has kept his progression up the leaderboard each week going.
Outside tip:
Although it’s another restrictive field this week I am still going to throw in an outside tip mainly because Cameron Smith 80/1 – with Ladbrokes – is in great form and had an eleventh-place finish at the CJ Cup and has been improving each week since the start of the new season.
As always good luck
