The PGA Tour now moves into its FedEx Cup play-offs stage, with the Top 125 players fighting it out to make the Top 70 who go through to next week’s BMW Championship before we move to the Tour Championship final at East Lake.

With the Northern Trust alternating venues between Liberty National and TPC Boston Golf Club, this being an even year it’s the turn of TPC Boston to host the event. The course is about 25 miles south of Boston and originally designed by Arnold Palmer and built in 2002, the course was then re-designed in 2007 by Gil Hanse and Brad Faxon.

Gil Hanse of Hanse Golf Course Design is known as one of the best traditional golf course designers in the United States and along with Brad Faxon was commissioned to undertake a re-design with the remit to make the course blend in more naturally with its New England surroundings.

Gil Hanse spent a year in Great Britain studying the earliest examples of golf course architecture and interned with Hawtree and Son, one of the oldest golf course architectural firms in the world. The influence of Hawtree and Son can be seen in Gil Hanse work, preserving and protecting the integrity of the land, maximizing the natural characteristics of the terrain and minimizing human impact on the landscape during construction.

Hanse became only the third American architect to build a course in Scotland when he created Craighead Golf Links, which opened in 1998. Ron Whitten, Editor of Golf Course Architecture said, “This was a refinement and enhancement of a course whose basic structure was sound, not a total renovation or wholesale replacement.”

My tips to Win:

Leading the way into the FedEx Cup play-offs is Justin Thomas 12/1 – Ladbrokes – who already has three wins to his name on this shortened wraparound season, but he will no doubt be looking to maintaining and extending that lead going into the last two play-off events. Justin has won over the TPC Boston course back in 2017 at the Dell Technologies Championship firing final rounds of 63 and 66 respectively and I bet he can’t wait for this week and the FedEx Cup play-offs to start.

I am going to be sticking with quite a few tips from last week and first up is Patrick Reed 30/1 – with Ladbrokes – who had a Top 10 finish at the Wyndham Championship, which was his second in his last four starts. Patrick is another player that seems to enjoy the TPC Boston layout with three Top 6 finishes from his six starts there.

Another great Top 5 finish at the Wyndham Championship should see Webb Simpson 30/1 – with SportingBet – in buoyant mood coming into this week. Webb has already won since the restart at the RBC Heritage and has two other Top 12 finishes, my only surprise was that he didn’t challenge at the PGA championship, but I am sure he will want to be in the thick of the FedEx Cup battle starting this week on a course he has previously won on.

Each-way tips:

I think we are about to see the best of Daniel Berger 35/1 – with WilliamHill – in these play-offs, it seems his game has suddenly clicked together this year and his win at the Charles Schwab – which he followed up with a third place finish the following week – confirmed that to himself. I think his scheduling has been perfect and the runner-up finish at the WGC and then a Top 15 at the PGA should see a confident and determined player teeing it up at Boston and think he may just be the surprise package of these play-offs.

I did tip Paul Casey 50/1 – with WilliamHill – last week and while he played some solid golf he didn’t hole enough birdie putts to get into a position to challenge. Paul does have a runner-up and a Top 5 finish over the TPC Boston course and I am sure he will be looking forward to getting back into the thick of battle come the weekend.

Outside tip:

Another player that I will be sticking with this week is Billy Horschel 66/1 – with Oddschecker – who just missed out on a win at the weekend’s Wydham Championship and he will know doubt be disappointed in the way he played those last three holes. Once he takes stock he will realise that was his fourth Top 25 finish from his last five starts and his second Top 7 and that his golf game is in great shape coming into the play-offs, which he has won before.

Longer odds:

Try Emiliano Grillo 200/1 – with SportingBet

As always good luck
