With travel being restricted this years CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges has become The CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek, with the PGA Tour extending its stay in Las Vegas.

Shadow Creek opened for play in 1989 designed by Tom Fazio & Andy Banfield who sculptured the course out of the rugged Nevada desert, the course looks like it belongs in North Carolina and that is down to the design skills of Fazio and Banfield creating vistas with streams and trees galore and set in the most breath-taking location with majestic mountains as the backdrop, Bermuda grass summer fairways and winter rye, the playing surfaces are quite stunning throughout the year.

The course was the brain child of Steve Wynn who wanted to create a desert oasis and tie it to his various properties for marketing purposes. When you book a tee time here you get the full VIP treatment from being taken by stretch limo to the course where your caddy will be waiting for you, assigned labelled lockers are provided in the stunning club house and the practice area is divided by strands of trees into areas that hold four players, so each group can practice in private.

The marketing hype was so intense around the courses opening that it went straight into Golf Digests Top 10 courses in the US, not just Nevada!

Smoke and mirrors had nothing on Steve Wynn and his marketing team when it came Shadow Creek. The emperor’s new clothes it is not and it is a stunning course in its own right, but Top 10 in the US…

My tips to Win:

This week’s defending champion is Justin Thomas 12/1 – with WilliamHill – and while he may not be teeing it up at the same course, he will still feel his is defending his title this week and I think you all know by now that I feel defending champions always like to put up a good defence no matter what their current form. Justin did just miss out on winning the Tour Championship and a Top 10 at the US Open shows he is playing some great golf at the moment.

It will be interesting to see Matthew Wolff’s 22/1 – with SportingBet – reaction to losing the play-off at the weekend for the Shriners Hospitals Open. Matt has two starts so far this wraparound season and has two runner-up finishes, will he be all guns blazing to get that win or will those two “defeats” get to him and I am going with he is mentally tough and will be doing all he can to get that win.

Each-way tips:

I am sure a lot of players will want to get off to a quick start to the new wraparound season and none more so than Viktor Hovland 35/1 – with UniBet – who also has the added incentive of trying to make the European Ryder Cup team. Viktor has started with a Top 15 at the US Open and he will be looking to get a win in one of the bigger events on the PGA Tour and what better place than in this event with this field in preparation for the Masters in a couple of weeks’ time.

After finishing last season so well and a fourth-place finish at the US Open I am sure it was a shock to his system when Harris English 45/1 – with OddsChecker – missed the cut at the weekends Shriners Hospitals Open. As in all things it is how you react to these situations and I am sure Harris will be looking to be right in the thick of it here come Sunday to show last week was just a blip.

Outside tip:

I will do an outside tip for this event as I do feel Cameron Smith 110/1 – with OddsChecker – has been in good form and finished last season’s FedEx Cup play-offs well and a Top 25 at the weekend should see him in confident mood and with no cut I think he is worth a quid each-way at these odds.

As always good luck
