The European Tour splits in two this week with the cosanctioned European and Sunshine Tour South African Open moving to the Gary Player Country Club. The course is one of the major attractions at the once infamous Sun City resort in the north west region of South Africa. Sun City has two golf courses, the Lost City course which features crocodiles in one of its ponds, and the Gary Player Country club which has consistently been rated as the number one or two courses in South Africa.

The fairways consist of a lush kikuyu and are complemented by immaculate bent-grass greens. Designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirkby and named after Player in celebration of his status as South Africa's greatest golfer, this par 72 track measures 7,655 yards from the championship tees. It is one of the longest golf courses in the world.

The Kikuyu-grassed fairways and bent grass greens contrast magnificently with the more barren thorn-scrub and aloe-covered hillsides through which the parkland course meanders. The fairways are wide but are bordered by tough kikuyu rough and untended African bushveld which, together with the tricky greens are the course's main defences.

Water comes into play on five holes, most famously on the par-five 9th with its island green, which is surrounded by waterfalls and artificial rocks. There are natural amphitheatres at the 9th and 18th holes, as well as several other vantage points around the course, giving thousands of spectators great views of the course as well as the players.

My tips to Win:

Not many players win back-to-back but I think Christiaan Bezuidenhout 15/2– with SportingBet – could do just that this week after his victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship. While everyone around him went backwards in the last round Christiaan shot a final round 69 to win the tournament and he will come into this week buzzing and wanting to win his countries national Open Championship.

I am going to stick with a couple of players this week and first up is Scott Jamieson 22/1 – with BetFred – who comes into this week on the back of his sixth-place finish at the weekends Alfred Dunhill Championship. As I stated last week Scott seems to enjoy the African swing of the tour and he also had a Top 20 finish at the Joburg Open and it was no surprise that he elected to stay in Africa rather than head off to Dubai for this week’s event.

The other player I am going to stick with is Wilco Nienaber 20/1 – with 888Sport – who had a Top 12 finish at the weekends Alfred Dunhill Championship following on from his runner-up finish the week before at the Joburg Open. Wilco certainly hits the ball a long way and it will be interesting to see how he tackles the course this week as the Gary Player Country Club course is 3,730 ft above sea level and the ball will fly even further.

Each-way tips:

I was surprised that Dean Burmester 40/1 – with BetFred – missed the cut at the weekends Alfred Dunhill Championship especially as he was coming into that week on the back of two Top 20 finishes one being his fifth-place finish at the Italian Open. Dean also had a sixth-place finish at the English Championship and with a Top 15 finish on this track when he played in the Nedbank Challenge, I am sure he will fancy his chances of getting back on track this week.

Darren Fichardt 45/1 – with UniBet – has teed it up on the Gary Player Country Club three times for the Nedbank Challenge and has not finished outside of the Top 12. Darren has already won on the Sunshine Tour this season and has three other Top 5 finishes from his nine starts and with both those records he will be looking forward to this week

Outside tip:

I have been watching Scott Vincent 80/1 – with BetFred – since the restart and he has had six Top 25 finishes from his sixteen starts including two Top 10s. Scott has been playing solid golf but has not really made the Top 20 since his eighth-place finish at the Portugal Masters, but some consistent golf at the Alfred Dunhill Championship see him finish inside the Top 20 and I feel these are good odds.

Longer odds:

Try Hennie du Plessis 225/1 – with OddsChecker

As always good luck
