| As I write this review the last day of the 2020 FedEx Cup play-offs are just about to start and here we are talking about the start to the 2021 wraparound season of the PGA Tour. It has been a strange year and I am sure there are more twist and turns before we get to December 31st. There will be a lot of players trying to make sure they don’t miss out on the play-offs next year and new players trying to get off to a good start and others warming up for next week’s US Open, it all points to a very interesting Safeway Open.
There are two courses at Silverado, the North and South, which opened for play in April 1967 when the Silverado Country Club & Resort came into being. The original 18-hole course was redesigned into two 18-hole courses by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, and the North course, which is the track I play, has just been through another redesign, this time by 1976 Open Champion Johnny Miller.
If you have already read my review of Sonoma GC and how that takes course maintenance up another notch from Windsor, then Silverado takes it to a whole new level. I have never seen this many green-keeping staff in one place – and believe me I see them all as I’m first out chasing them round, making it round in two-and-a-half hours. There are at least two if not three or four guys on every hole.

My tips to Win:
After bagging a win in his first senior event I am sure Phil Mickelson 20/1 – with SportingBet – will be wanting to show that he can still show the young kids that he still has what it takes to compete on the main Tour. With this being Phil’s warm up to the US Open Mickelson will probably be trying to put his strategic game head on, trying to hit more fairways and if he does that I am sure he will be in one of the final pairings come Sunday.
When someone has won an event twice and achieved that with back-to-back victories you know they love teeing it up at Silverado and Brendan Steele 25/1 – with Ladbrokes – is that man. It has taken Brendan a while to settle to having no fans having put in some solid if unspectacular performances he also missed the cut at the Wyndham which was his last event. I am sure he will want to get the new wraparound season off to a good start and what better place than at an event that you have a great record at.
I am sure missing out on the FedEx Cup play-offs are going to be on a lot of players minds this week and one of those is Harold Varner lll 28/1 – with BetFred – who missed out by ten spots on making the Top 70 for the BMW Championship by missing the cut at The Northern Trust. Harold has two Top 15 finishes here in his last three starts and hopefully he will take the positives from his Top 10 finish at the Wyndham rather than that missed cut.
Each-way tips:
I wonder if Emiliano Grillo 33/1 – with 888Sport – frustrates himself as much as he does everyone else! The lad has everything it takes to be a regular winner on the PGA Tour and even challenge in some of the bigger events, but one bad shot and the red mist appears and he just can’t let it go and that one bad shot then affects the rest of his round. Emiliano teed it up here for the first time back in 2015 and promptly went on to win, he can do that again this week if he lets himself.
Imagine missing out on the FedEx Cup play-offs by two places, Kevin Streelman 40/1 – with SportingBet – must be kicking himself as he watches the guys teeing it up at East Lake for $15m. It could also prove to be a good motivator to not let that happen again and get the season off to a good start. Kevin doesn’t have the greatest of records over the Silverado course and has only really started to make the Top 25 twice in the last two years, but now he has started to play well here I expect that to continue this week.
Outside tip:
I am sure after turning professional just three years ago Maverick McNealy 80/1 – with Coral – will be happy with his progress in making it through to the BMW Championship in the play-offs and six Top 25 finishes – three of which were Top 10s – from his twenty-three starts. Maverick will no doubt be taking inspiration from some of his peers that have recently made the full Tour and already winning tournaments and Major Championships. McNealy had a great college record winning twelve events and tied the Stanford University record for lowest 18-hole score of 61.
Longer odds:
Try Luke Donald 350/1 – 888Sport
As always good luck
