| The European Tour now moves from Spain to The Algarve for the Portugal Masters which has been held on the Victoria course since 2007 with Steve Webster winning its inaugural event. Spain’s Alvaro Quiros shot a final round of 68 to win the 2008 title by three shots ahead of Scotland’s Paul Lawrie.
Lee Westwood and Richard Green lifted the title in 2009 and 2010 while Tom Lewis is the only player to have won it twice so far, winning in 2011 and 2018. Lewis birdied five of the last seven holes to claim his maiden title in only his third professional start, he also shot a 61 the day after Oliver Wilson shot 59 on his way to winning for the second time.
Designed by Arnold Palmer the Oceanico Victoria Course is a beautifully manicured track that weighs in at 7,227-yards. The club is situated in the Golf-Mekka Vilamoura area. The terrain is flat but don’t let that put you off its a breathtaking design. Each hole has 5 teeing options and the course features are the many lakes and waterfalls as well as the strategically placed bunkers.

My tips to Win:
I think one of the main reasons why Tommy Fleetwood 11/2 – with SportingBet– has decided to play in Portugal rather than acclimatise for next week’s US Open at the Safeway Open in California is because he wants to replicate being in the thick of the battle come Sunday afternoon. I think Tommy feels more comfortable here in the Algarve and able to do that in this event where he has had a couple of Top 25 finishes and with the added bonus of probably having his family with him enjoying some of the Portuguese sun.
Up until missing the cut at the weekends Andalucia Masters Marcus Kinhult 28/1 – with Ladbrokes – looked like he was just about to start challenging to win tournaments again after settling down to the new normal with no fans, having made the Top 15 in his previous two starts. Real Club Valderrama was a tough challenge in that wind and I am sure after his initial frustrations having an extra couple of days of practice in Portugal could prove invaluable. Marcus has only played in this event once and made the Top 5 so he will have had a lot of positive vibes when he arrived here.
Each-way tips:
There are some great each-way bets this week and the first of those is defending champion Steven Brown 55/1 – with BetVictor – who I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised to see this far down the betting odds. Steven comes into this week on the back of a Top 10 at the Andalucia Masters and believe me in those conditions he will be more than happy with that finish. Brown also had a Top 5 finish a few weeks ago at the English Championship and I am sure he will be looking forward to being back here defending this week.
Another player that I was pleasantly surprised to see a long way down the betting odds was Sebastian Soderberg 66/1 – with BetFair – who is another player that missed the cut at the Andalucia Masters, but had two Top 10 finishes in his previous two starts. Sebastian finished inside the Top 10 on his first start here firing a 64 along the way and although he missed the cut the following year I think he will be challenging again this week.
I have been watching Wil Besseling 66/1 – with SportingBet – since his third-place finish at the Austria Open which was the first tournament back after lockdown and he did have a Top 15 finish at the Celtic Classic a few weeks ago but it was his third-place finish at the weekends tough Andalucia Master that will prove to himself that there is more to Dutch golf than Joost Luiten.
Outside tip:
Lucas Bjerregaard 90/1 – with Ladbrokes – is also a past winner of this event and it has been a tough year for the Dane. Lucas has been playing on the PGA Tour and has basically before and after lockdown missed the cut nine times from his ten starts and has come back to the European Tour to regain some confidence. There are signs that this is starting to happen making the cut in his third event since being back at the UK Championship, but being back here will only bring positive memories of that win and hopefully rekindle the player that he knows he is.
Longer odds:
Try Joël Stalter 200/1 – with Ladbrokes
As always good luck
