This year sees the return of the Joburg Open at Randpark Golf Club which was last played in 2018 and which has also hosted the South African Open in 1995 ¬– 2000, 2019 and 2020. The course that was established in the mid-60s has undergone some major changes since then.

In 2015 Sean Quinn, constructed seven new holes on the Firethorn course and rebuilt every green and several bunkers were modified and given distinctive flash fronted faces.

The cameras will mainly focus on the 18th, which was changed from a long par five to a very tough 507-yard par four. The front nine plays like a totally different course, the par 3 2nd has been removed and replaced with a par five which doglegs right to the old 3rd green. The 6th, 7th and 8th holes were also replaced by four new holes that run counter-clockwise to the old routing.

The Firethorn course at Randpark is renowned for its tough finish, starting at the 470-yard, par four, 16th hole, where a dam needs to be avoided on the left of the fairway. The 235-yard par 3 17th has water to the left and sand to the right with the crescendo being the new 507-yard, par four, that doglegs left across a stream to a well-guarded, elevated green.

The Joburg Open will have the largest field of the season, with 240 players competing over Randparks two courses – Firethorn and Bushwillow and it's the first time this event has not been played at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club.

My tips to Win:

It has been a strange situation for Joost Luiten 25/1 – with BetFred – since the restart as he started well in the first two tournaments in Austria only to fade, but there has been signs over the last few weeks that he will start to challenge again. Joost played some great golf at the Italian Open and opened up with rounds of 67 and 65 at the Cyprus Showdown and I feel he will be in the thick of it again come Sunday.

I have tipped Marcus Armitage 28/1 – with UniBet – a few times this year and feel the lad is on the verge of picking up his first European Tour title. Marcus has had five Top 25 finishes in his last five starts which includes two Top 10s and making it through to the final day of the Cyprus Showdown. Armitage also has two Top 5 finishes over this track in both the South African Open and the Joburg Open

It’s taken a while for Gavin Green 28/1 – with UniBet – to settle down to the no fans situation, but a Top 10 finish at the Cyprus Showdown hopefully shows that he is feeling more comfortable in the new situation. Having said that Gavin’s seventh place finish was his third Top 11 finish since the restart and with two Top 20 finishes over the Randpark course I think he will fancy his chances this week.

Each-way tips:

It has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for Louis De Jager 40/1 – with BetFred – since the restart with two missed cuts and three Top 15 finishes from his nine starts, but opening rounds of 68 and 65 at the Cyprus Showdown and making it through to the final day and finish in the Top 10 shows his golf game is in good shape. Louis does have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Randpark, I am hoping it’s a love-in this week.

I have said before Scott Jamieson 66/1 – with SkyBet – enjoys the African swing on the European Tour and it’s no coincidence that his only win on the tour came at the inaugural Nelson Mandela Championship, what has been a surprise is that the Scot has never added to that victory. Scott hit the ground running after the restart with two Top 10 finishes from his first three starts and I think being back in Africa may just be what Jamieson needs to challenging again.

Outside tip:

Darius Van Driel 125/1 – with SportingBet – had a Top 5 at the Austrian Open the first tournament of the restart, but has since played solid if unspectacular golf and apart from his eleventh-place finish at the UK Championship his two best finishes have come back-to-back in his last two starts and he fired a second round 64 at the Italian Open which was his last start. Coming back into form in this field I think these could prove to be great odds.

Longer odds:

Try Jaco Van Zyl 150/1 – with BetFair

As always good luck
