The tour now moves back to the continent for the Italian Open which has now lost its “Rolex Event” tour status and going by some of the recent comments of the course which were made by players who have played at Chervò Golf Club this month, the course isn’t in great condition especially the bunkers, so I hope a lot of work has gone into them over the last week or so!

The course opened for play in 2009 with Kurt Rossknecht designing four nine-hole layouts named Benaco, Solferino, San Martino and the executive nine known as Pozzolego. The course sits in the rolling hills overlooking Lake Garda and as you can imagine has some amazing view of the lakes and the surrounding landscape.

The course meanders through the hills and fruit orchards with wide fairways, minimal rough, plenty of bunkers and large greens with some interesting green complexes, which will create some testing pin positions and that is where being in the right part of the fairway will be key.

But, it is the spectacular views and natural beauty of the area that will take centre stage on TV this week and while the course itself may not be up to the standard of previous Italian Open venues, it’s those elements that will grab the golfing viewers interest.

My tips to Win:

I am going to stick with Matt Wallace 10/1 – with BetFair – there’s not much you can do when someone throws in rounds of 62 and 63 at you and Matt played some great golf himself. As Wallace stated in various interviews over the weekend he is in the middle of a process and with that added to his natural talent I think we will see him win at least once this year on the European Tour.

It was probably already a planned break for Victor Perez 12/1 – with SportingBet – after the BMW PGA Championship, but I also think given a week to reflect he will be more than happy with his performance at Wentworth. Victor shot under par every round and a final round 68 showed he was battling right to the end and that should put him in a great frame of mind coming into this week.

It’s been a few years since there has been a home winner of this event and one that’s name didn’t end with Molinari, but I feel Renato Paratore 28/1 – with UniBet – has come back into form at just the right time to give Italian golf fans hope of another home player taking the title this week.

Each-way tips:

Another player that needed a week’s rest but for different reasons is Jorge Campillo 55/1 – with Ladbrokes – who was on a great run of form until the Scottish Open and I am sure the weather got to him like it did most players that week, but a missed cut at the BMW PGA Championship and not playing last week will have given Jorge time to reflect and take the positives from his three Top 10s in his previous four starts to those two events and comeback this week ready to challenge again.

Laurie Canter 66/1 – with UniBet – also suffered during the Scottish Open and didn’t get to tee it up at Wentworth in the BMW PGA Championship, but he was another player that was in great form going into the Scottish Open on the back of four Top 15 finishes that included a Top 5 and runner-up finish. Laurie is one of those players that has lost and regained his playing card over the years and is still waiting for his maiden European Tour title, but if he can tap back into those swing thoughts that gave him those Top 15 results then I think these could be very good odds.

Outside tip:

It was good to see Jamie Donaldson 80/1 – with SportingBet – fire a final round 66 at the weekend to see him move into the Top 10, his second in his last four starts. It’s taken a while for the Welshman to get back to anywhere near his best golf but there have been glimpses and his finish in Scotland at the weekend was his best so far this year and he will be in buoyant mood when he arrives here this week.

Longer odds:

Try Lorenzo Gagli 150/1 – with Ladbrokes

As always good luck
