| This is the final week of what has been dubbed the UK Swing of the rescheduled European Tour before moving to continental Europe.
The European Tour moves from one Ryder Cup venue to another going from the Celtic Manor to the Belfry and to the venue that basically changed the history of the modern-day Ryder Cup matches. The Brabazon course has hosted four Ryder Cups and Europe has won two, halved one and lost one and is a firm favourite for European spectators, but it was the 1985 matches here when Europe finally turned the tide of American domination in the biannual event.
The Brabazon opened for play in 1977 with a match between Seve Ballesteros and Johnny Miller against Tony Jacklin and Brian Barnes and how poetic that it was Seve and Jacklin who played that opening match as they would go on to become entwined in the Belfry’s history.
The course was designed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas who were given an unremarkable piece of farmland, which required significant sculpting to turn it into a golf course and it’s also its downfall as when it rains it can turn back into a bit of farmland becoming very muddy and boggy in places. In the late 90s Dave Thomas was commissioned to give the course a £2.7m makeover to try and help solve some of those problems and it has helped, but unfortunately not totally solved them. There is now more water on The Brabazon than just about any other inland course in the UK.
The memorable holes are of course the 10th and 18th holes, the 10th being a risk and reward par 4 with the green being protected by water and who can forget Seve driving that green and of course Christy O’Connors 2-iron into the heart of the triple-tiered green to win the 1985 Ryder Cup matches, it will be an interesting week to see how this generation of golfers take on the course.

My tips to Win:
After a two week break I am sure Rasmus Hojgaard 16/1 – with UniBet – is itching to pick up where he left off but this time finally getting one of the UK Swing events over the line to notch up his second European Tour victory this year. Before Rasmus took a two week break he had not been outside the Top 6 in his last three starts and if you factor in his sixth-place finish at the Oman Open just before lockdown that is four Top 6 finishes from five starts.
I am sure Andy Sullivan 25/1 – with UniBet – has teed it up a few times at The Belfry as the course is not too far from his hometown of Nuneton and like most European players I’m sure winning here with its Ryder Cup history adds that extra bit of incentive. Andy has already won on the UK Swing of the European Tour taking the English Championship and a week’s rest should see him refreshed and ready to add the UK Championship and if he does – depending on where other players finish – could top the mini order of merit which would be the icing on the cake.
Gradually founding his feet over the last few weeks is Galvin Green 25/1 – with SportingBet – and if he keeps his current trajectory of finishes going should be right in the thick of it come Sunday at the Belfry. Gavin finished outside the Top 25 once in his six starts before the lockdown with his highest finish being a third place at the Saudi International and I do feel he will win his first European Tour title this year.
Each way tips:
I was surprised Chris Paisley 66/1 – with OddsChecker – lost his way a little after his third-place finish at the Hero Open and Top 20 at the English Championship when he missed the cut at the Celtic Classic. Paisley just missed out on a Top 25 finish at the weekend at the Wales Open but his final two rounds of 69 in tough conditions all point to him getting his game back on track and if that is the case I feel he will be challenging again this week.
Lockdown couldn’t have come at a worse time for Jorge Campillo 80/1 – with OddsChecker – just after winning the Qatar Masters, although coming back at a tough PGA Championship probably wasn’t the wisest move for your first start back. Jorge missed the cut at the Celtic Classic which was understandable after the flight back from California and he didn’t get off to a great start at the Wales Open but recovered to make the Top 10 during tough conditions and he should be in a positive frame of mind arriving at the Belfry this week
Outside tip:
Since turning pro it’s been a battle each year for Laurie Canter 125/1 – with SpreadEx – having to qualify for his card each year from 2011 – 2017, but since coming out of lockdown on the UK swing Laurie has had a couple of Top 10 finishes one being his fifth-place finish at the Wales Open at the weekend in tough conditions. I am sure he will be buoyed by that finish and added to his recent form could be a surprise addition to the mix come Sunday afternoon.
Longer odds:
Try Romain Wattel 250/1 – with OddsChecker
As always good luck
