| The UK Swing of the rescheduled European Tour now moves to Wales for two weeks and the 2010 Ryder Cup course at the Celtic Manor. I played the course a couple of years ago and at that time they still had all the Ryder cup hoardings around the first tee, which I think is a great move and no doubt puts a smile on all visiting European golfers. Below is my review with a link to the rest of the review and course video at the bottom
Stepping onto the first tee I can’t help but be reminded of the Ryder Cup especially as the hoardings around the first tee are still in place and with the crowd roaring in my imagination I take the tiger line down the left and just clear the bunkers.
It is early May and the course is in immaculate condition, they certainly know how to sculpture and present the course. The first plays down wind and I only have a wedge in. The greens are firm and its one pitch and through the back but I make the up and down for par and walk to the second all square! Yes, if you are European its match-play all the way, if you are playing alone you have an imaginary opponent be it Rickie Fowler or Hunter Mahan, my opponent for the day – oh yes it's that match!!
The fifth is a beautiful little dogleg right that has a little brook protecting the front of the green and the small white cottage in the background to the left of the green adds the right amount of charm to proceedings.

My tips to Win:
Hopefully the flight back from California won’t put Joost Luiten 15/1 – with SpreadEx – at too much of a disadvantage and although he didn’t challenge I am sure he will be pleased with his final round 69 to finish just outside the Top 50. Joost won the last event held at Celtic Manor on the European Tour and will be defending his Wales Open title here next week. On his first start over the Celtic Manor course Luiten had a runner-up finish, followed that up with a Top 5 the following year before that win in 2014, so this course obviously suits his eye.
It’s taken Jordan Smith 35/1 – with BetFred – longer to get back into the swing of things since the restart but a Top 15 finish at the weekend’s English Championship should see him teeing it up at Celtic Manor in Confident mood. Jordan started the year well with a Top 25 in Abu Dhabi and a sixth-place finish in Oman before the lockdown, but I expect him to kick on now that he’s back in the groove of playing competitive golf again.
Each-way tips:
Like last week there are some great each-way and outside tips so I am going with two of each this week and first up is Alexander Bjork 45/1 – with SportingBet – who had a third-place finish at the Hero Open a couple of weeks ago, making it two Top 6 finishes in his last three starts one of which was his six-place at the Qatar Masters before lockdown. Alexander has won on the European tour taking the Volvo China Open back in 2018 and I feel he has a good chance to add to that this week.
Another player that I am going to be sticking with this week is Scott Jamieson 45/1 – with SportingBet – who again started with a bad round and then went on to card rounds of 63, 68 and 64 to make the Top 10 at the English Championship at the weekend. Something will have to give, Scott will either carry his good form into this week and put four good rounds together or he will just disappear back into obscurity, but on his current for he is hard to discount at these odds.
Outside tips:
Zimbabwe born, American based Sean Crocker 66/1 – with BetFred – whose father played for the Zimbabwe international cricket team and moved to the US due to political unrest has decided to take the Brooks Koepka route to start his professional golf career serving his apprenticeship on the European Challenge Tour and now after gaining his card in 2019 on the full tour. Sean has progressed up the leaderboard each week since the restart making the Top 15 at the Hero Open and then the Top 10 at the English Championship and these are great odds should he keep that trajectory going.
How can we not tip hometown boy – well Pontypridd is only 15-miles from Cardiff – Jamie Donaldson 66/1 – with WilliamHill – who comes into this week on the back of two Top 15 finishes from his last two starts. Jamie has six Top 15 finishes from his ten starts at the Wales Open which was held over the Celtic Manor course and two of those were Top 5 finishes so it seems he raises to the challenge of playing on home ground.
Longer odds:
Try David Horsey 150/1 – with BetFred
As always good luck
