It's the European Tour's flagship event this at the stunning Harry Colt West course on the Wentworth Estate, not many people know that Colt also designed the East Course, which is a course I really enjoy playing. Ernie Els made some changes to the West course between 2005 – 2010, which were not received with universal appraisal.

The clubhouse was originally known as Wentworth house in the 19th century and was the home to the brother-in-law of the Duke of Wellington, it was then sold to a Spanish exile by the name of Count Ramon Cabrera in 1850. After his death his wife purchased some of the surrounding land to form what become known as the Wentworth Estate.

In 1912 builder WG Tarrant acquired the developing rights for the Estate and based on his St Georges Hill model commissioned Harry Colt to design a course around the Wentworth house. Tarrant then developed the large houses that you see on the estate today. And in an echo of today’s financial climate, development of Wentworth Estate ground to a halt due to the Depression of the late 1920s.

In 1931 the banks asked for repayment of a large debenture that had been taken out, Surprise Surprise Tarrant was forced to declare bankruptcy. The ownership of Wentworth Estates Ltd came under the control of Sir Lindsay Parkinson & Co Ltd.

My tips to Win:

I did tip Tommy Fleetwood 11/1 – with SportingBet – at last week’s Scottish Open and if he had won the play-off I don’t think I would have tipped him this week as not many players have back-to-back wins, but after missing out by that short putt I feel Tommy will be more determined to make sure of that win this week.

Regular followers of my guide will know how highly I have rated Erik Van Rooyen 25/1 – with Ladbrokes – since he started playing regularly on the European Tour and now starting to make his way on the PGA Tour. Erik has had two Top 20 finishes from his two starts in this event and should be in confident mood after firing a final round 65 to make the Top 6 at the Scottish Open at the weekend.

Each-way tips:

Shane Lowry 35/1 – with SportingBet – will no doubt be disappointed with his missed cut at the Irish Open two weeks ago, listening to interviews I know he wanted to put on a good performance for all the fans in the North who roared him on to victory in the Open Championship last year. Shane has a great record at the BMW PGA Championship with three Top 10 finishes including a runner-up finish and numerous Top 20 finishes, the Wentworth course obviously suits his eye and I expect him to be in the thick of it again come the weekend.

Another tip I am going to stick with from last week is Sam Horsfield 50/1 – with UniBet – even though he missed the Cut in Scotland. Sam has been playing great golf this year winning two events on the European Tour since the restart. Sam has played in this event twice and progressed each year making the Top 15 last year and I don’t think it is going to be long before Horsfield starts winning some big events and I expect him to be in one of the final pairings come Sunday.

A Top 6 finish at the Scottish Open at the weekend should see Marcus Kinhult 80/1 – with UniBet – arrive at Wentworth in buoyant mood and his opening round 66 shows his game is in good shape coming into this week and would have put to bed those demons from his second round 80 in Ireland. Marcus has teed it up twice at Wentworth and while he made the Top 50 last year it’s his twelfth-place finish in his first start here that I am sure will inspire him this week.

Outside tip:

Dean Burmester 125/1 – with UniBet – has been playing some solid golf since the restart and although he missed the cut in Scotland at the weekend I think these are good odds for someone who has two Top 15 finishes at the BMW PGA Championship from his three starts over the Wentworth track.

Longer odds:

Try Lucas Bjerregaard 200/1 – with SportingBet

As always good luck
