The European Tour now moves to a new country and venue for the Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Open. The course opened in 2002 and was designed by American Cabell B Robinson who ranks this course among the best he has designed.

Aphrodite Hills is the first ever leisure and golf development of its kind on Cyprus, and meanders through indigenous olive and carob trees which were supplemented with additional flora to complete a mature Mediterranean landscape.

The course is a mix of challenging pot bunkers, cross bunkers, ponds, manicured fairways of lush Bermuda grass and large tiered greens, some of which have a horseshoe shaped design. The course is visually spectacular and laid out over two relatively flat pieces of land that are divided by a 150-foot deep canyon which Robinson has incorporated into the design to fashion two amazing holes on the front nine – the 3rd and 7th.

Cabell B. Robinson stated: “If you can carry 200 metres with your driver, you should try the back tee on the 3rd. It looks forever over the gorge, but it is only that far to reach safety. It is a thrill of a lifetime shot if you succeed. The 7th deep within the bowels of the canyon is another dramatic shot, while fantastic sea views are to be had at the 8th and 15th… reaching for the back-pin position on the 12th needs the most courage, while the 16th is my pick for the toughest par-4, and the 18th is a reachable and wonderful par-5.”

My tips to Win:

If you check out the European Tour stats you will see that Andy Sullivan 14/1 – with BetFair – sits in the runner-up spot on three of the six main scoring stats, which are Scoring – Stroke Average, Strokes Gained – Total and Approach – Strokes Gained. Andy has already won since the restart and had a third-place finish at the BMW PGA Championship firing a final round 65. I feel he is the man to beat this week and he is also the bookies favourite and he will in no doubt be in confident mood.

It was good to see Joost Luiten 25/1 – with BetFred – back to nearing his best in Italy at the weekend, I did tip Joost a few times at the beginning of restart but after putting himself in great positions he just seemed to lose his way, but two final rounds of 68 hopefully signals that the Dutchman it coming back into form and I am sure he will be relishing being back in the thick of battle come Sunday afternoon.

I am surprised that Marcus Kinhult 28/1 – with SportingBet – hasn’t yet added to his British Masters victory at Hillside last year, I did feel at the time that Marcus would go on and start challenging on a regular basis, especially with his talent. Kinhult has two Top 10 finishes from his last two starts so his golf game is in good shape and with this field I expect him to be challenging this week.

Each-way tips:

Three Top 25 finishes from his last three starts shows Marcus Armitage 45/1 – with Ladbrokes – is playing consistently good golf and his Top 10 at the Italian Open was his second on the spin after taking seventh places at the Scottish Championship. Marcus’s only win has come on the Challenge Tour back in 2016, but in his current form and with this field, he has a great chance of being in the thick of it this week.

If Wil Besseling 50/1 – with BetFred – is ever going to step out of the shadow of fellow Dutch golfer Joost Luiten then this is the time, Wil has had two third-place finishes since the restart and three other Top 15 finishes and he opened up with a 65 at last weeks Italian Open. Besseling has won on the Challenge Tour but has still to win on the main tour, but in his current vain of form he should be in confident mood to put that stat right.

Outside tip:

Having won on the Challenge Tour in 2019 and taking his first full European Tour victory last year at the European Masters Sebastian Soderberg 90/1– with 888Sport – will be looking to make sure he keeps that run going by winning an event in 2020. To be honest I was surprised to see him this far down the betting odds after a Top 10 finish in his last start at the Scottish Championship and if you add that to his tenth and fifth place finishes in Wales, I think these are great odds for the Swede.

Longer odds:

Try Toby Tree 175/1– with BetFred

As always good luck
