| The European Tour now moves to Scotland and the Tom Doak designed Renaissance Club in North Berwick, nestled between Muirfield and Archerfield. Tom said of the land he was given to work with “To work in Scotland is a dream for any golf architect. The property for The Renaissance Club is unexpected, with sandy soils and windy conditions, combined with a variety of woods, gentle hills and open links, will give us the chance to build a special golf course with a character all its own.”
The word tough is mentioned quite a lot when it comes to The Renaissance Club that opened for play in 2008, the club has since acquired some land from the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers to build three new holes and brings some wonderful views of the Firth of Forth.
The course is relatively flat with plenty of fairway undulations but it’s the greens and their many contours that make being in the correct section of the green very important when playing your approach shot.
The course really kicks into gear at the seventh as you head out towards the shore and the newer holes. The 8th is the hardest hole on the course with the green sitting next to one of the many drystone walls that permeate the course. Measuring 7,300 yards from the tips with lots of very long carries to reach the fairway if the wind is up this week it will be a beast of a test for the players.
TV while be showing a lot of the new holes and the pick of the bunch is the 10th which doglegs around the cliffs and offers some fantastic views. The longer hitters will be relishing this risk and reward hole, but anything left and its 3-off the tee.

My tips to Win:
Well Saturday and Sunday at The Renaissance Club looks like it’s going to be cold, windy and damp so learning your game on the links courses of Liverpool’s Golf Coast should be ideal preparation. Step forward Tommy Fleetwood 11/1 – with SportingBet – and the bookies make him the man to beat this week and rightly so.
This year’s defending champion is Bernd Wiesberger 25/1 – with UniBet – who will no doubt want to put in a good defence of his title and coming in on the back of a solid performance at a very tough US Open at Winged Foot, I am sure he will be looking forward to being back here this week.
Each-way tips:
Due to a positive COVID test Sam Horsfield 35/1 – with BetFair – couldn’t compete at the US Open and he was one of my picks before he had to pull out. Sam has been in great form this year winning twice on the European Tour, he also has another Top 10 from his five starts since the rescheduled European Tour started and I expect him to be challenging again this week.
Romain Langasque 50/1 – with Ladbrokes – had a third-place finish here last year firing two rounds of 65 along the way, so I am sure he will have a lot of positive memories when he arrives here this week. There will be a slight difference to his arrival here this year as he is now a European Tour champion having won the Wales Open, he also notched up a Top 20 at a tough Valderrama and made the Top 35 at the US Open and he will not only be looking to compete this week, but aiming for his second European Tour title of the year.
A Top 10 finish at the Irish Open should see Jordan Smith 66/1 – with BetFred – arrive in Scotland in buoyant mood this week. Jordan has had some solid performances since lockdown was lifted but just lacked consistency over four rounds, but his opening round of 65 last week shows his game is in a good place and he following that up with four good rounds and I feel he could challenge this week.
Outside tip:
I did tip Calum Hill 100/1 – with UniBet – at last week’s Irish Open and while he played some solid golf he never really challenged and finished just outside the Top 25, which is a reflection of his season since the restart, a couple of finishes just outside the Top 25 and a couple of Top 10s. Calum won twice last year on the Challenge Tour so he does know how to get a tournament over the line and he shot a 64 here last year and I feel these are good odds for someone who is just one good round away from challenging.
Longer odds:
Try David Horsey 175/1 – with WilliamHill
As always good luck
