Designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, the plantation course at Kapalua Resort on Maui again plays host to this week's Hyundai Tournament of Champions. It’s a top quality field as you would expect with all the competitors having won on last year's PGA Tour.

KJ Choi who shot a 62 at the 2003 Mercedes-Benz Championship holds the course record on the Plantation course. The golf course features several fantastic ocean views with steep uphill climbs and downhill approaches which gives the opportunity for some dramatic TV coverage. One hole to watch out for is the par-5 finishing hole which is a downhill 663-yard par 5.

My tips to win:

After finally putting the “Bridesmaid” tag to bed with his US Open Championship win Dustin Johnson 6/1 – with StanJames – will be looking to build on his major haul this year and what better place to get this important year for the South Carolinian underway than winning in Hawaii. Dustin is a past champion winning in 2013 and has not been outside the Top 10 here each time he has teed it up.

Another player that seems to enjoy playing on the Kapalua Golf Club - Plantation Course is Patrick Reed 14/1 – with BetFred – who first teed it up here in 2014 when he finished in fourteenth place. The following year he came back to win the tournament shooting all four rounds in the 60s and defended his title last year with a runner-up place when he opened up with a 65 and I expect him to be in the thick of it again this year.

My each-way tips:

This is Daniel Berger’s 28/1 – with SportingBet – third season on the PGA Tour and I think this could be a significant season for the Floridian. He certainly has the game to go on and become a major championship winner – I did feel he was unfortunate not to make the Ryder Cup team. This is Daniel’s first outing over the Plantation course, but self belief has never been a problem for Berger and if he gets a good first round in he will be one to watch as the tournament moves into the weekend.

Another player who will be looking to make a statement of intent this week will be Branden Grace 40/1 – with Ladbrokes. After his forth place finish at the PGA Championship the South African seems to have slipped back slightly instead of using that finish as a springboard to making that next step up. Grace’s best finish since teeing it up at Baltusrol was on home soil at the Nedbank challenge where he finished in the Top 5.

My outside tip:

I know some of you still like an outside bet even in a restricted field event, so my pick this week is Pat Perez 80/1 – with Coral – who comes into this week on the back of winning the OHL Classic at Mayakoba firing a 62 along the way, this was Pat’s last event before teeing it up here this week. What is also significant is that the win followed on the back of a Top 10 finish that hints that he is happy where his golf game is at the moment. Perez has played in this event once before making the Top 10 and although the Arizonian has only won twice on the PGA Tour I think these are good odds given his current form.

As always good luck
