The 126th US Open Championship will be played at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, which was founded in 1891 and is the oldest incorporated golf club and was one of the five founding member clubs of the USGA.

The original twelve-hole golf course was designed by Willie Davis and expanded to eighteen holes in the spring of 1895. The original course was updated four times before the present course, designed by William Flynn and built by Dick Wilson opened for play in 1931.

The course utilises the natural topography of the Shinnecock Hills and is based on links courses in Britain and Ireland but the fairways and greens have a more inland/heathland feel to them. What does give it a links feel is the strong prevailing winds off the Atlantic to the southwest and the sandy rolling terrain and thick, reed-like grasses that border the fairways.

Recent changes to the course overseen by Coore & Crenshaw have seen widened fairways, expanded greens with new back tees and trees being removed. The course now measures 7,450 yards and with a Par 70 it’s a tough course when the wind blows.

Ben Hogan said of Shinnecock Hills and in a letter to a club member “Each hole is different and requires a great amount of skill to play properly. Each hole has complete definition. You know exactly where to shoot. All in all, I think it is one of the finest courses I have ever played.”


My tips to Win:

Scottie Scheffler 13/2 – with AKBets – Another chance at the Grand Slam this week and while he isn’t playing great that needs to be put into prospective as he does still have a win, three runner-up finishes and three other Top 5s

Tommy Fleetwood 22/1 – with BetVictor – Runner-up the last time the US Open was played here and has three Top 15s including two Top 5s from his last four starts

Matt Fitzpatrick 22/1 – with BetVictor – The 2022 US Open champion arrives here on the back of a runner-up finish in the Canadian Open and already has three wins this season

Each-way tips:

Tyrrell Hatton 40/1 – with BetVictor – Had a third-place finish at The Masters and missed the cut at the PGA Championship, but he does come into this week on the back of his second win on the LIV Tour. Tyrrell had a sixth-place finish the last time the US Open was held here

Patrick Reed 50/1 – with BetVictor – Hasn’t played since the PGA Championship where he notched up his second Top 15 in both Major Championships played so far this year. Patrick also has two wins and a runner-up finish from his six starts on the European Tour and had a Top 5 the last time the US Open was played here

Outside tips:

Aaron Rai 85/1 – with AKBets – The newly crowned PGA Champion has all it takes to go back-to-back majors. His no thrills fairways and greens approach will be perfectly suited to the way the USGA will set up the course this week

Longer odds:

Ryan Gerard 125/1 – with AKBets – Started the season with back-to-back runner-up finishes, but then didn’t really challenge after that. Ryan comes into this week on the back of a runner-up finish at a very tough Memorial Tournament and I think that will set him up nicely for this week
