The PGA Tour now moves north of the border and into Canada for the Canadian Open which was first played in 1904. The tournament will be played for the second year and the North Course at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley. The first course at the property was the Heathlands course designed by renowned Canadian architect Doug Carrick. Who after a trip to Portmarnock Golf Club in Ireland designed this links-inspired layout, with wind-swept dunes and pot bunkers echoing the traditions of old links courses.

There are now 54 holes at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley all designed by Carrick. Impressed with his Heathlands course he added the Hoot (in 2001), closely followed by the Toot (now called the North) a year later. Why the strange names for the two newer courses? Well, according to Carrick, “owner Jerry Humeniuk thinks the golf industry takes itself a bit too seriously and had actually considered calling them “Royal Hoot” and “Royal Toot,” as a playful swipe at other golf clubs which were adopting the Royal prefix at that time.

The North course – which will be used for this years Open – is known for its challenging layout and visually appealing design. Carrick designed the course to test professionals and low handicapped players, while remaining enjoyable for those with higher handicaps. The course is renowned for its well-maintained fairways, greens and features a variety of interesting holes and a "parkland" style layout with plenty of elevation changes, The course has undergone renovations, for this years Canadian Open including new bunkers and adjustments to tee locations.


My tips to Win:

Sam Burns 14/1 – with Bet365 – Lost in a play-off here last year so obviously the course fitted his eye and he comes into this week on the back of his third Top 10 finish of the year after his fourth-place finish at a tough Memorial Tournament

Tommy Fleetwood 14/1 – with Bet365 – Who can forget that putt on the final green to lose the play-off with Nick Taylor. Tommy comes into this week in great form with two Top 5 finishes in his last three starts

Each-way tips:

Kristoffer Reitan 33/1– with AKBets – Racked up his fourth Top 15 finish including his win and a runner-up in his last five starts at the weekend at the Memorial Tournament

Alex Fitzpatrick 40/1 – with BetVictor – I am going to stick with Alex again this week even though his odds have been slashed as he adds his fourth Top 10 finish in five starts on the PGA Tour including his win with Matt at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans

Eric Cole 45/1 – with BetVictor – Another Top 10 finish at the weekend in Ohio making it his sixth Top 15 in seven starts which includes his runner-up two weeks ago at the Charles Schwab Challenge

Outside tip:

Sudarshan Yellamaraju 70/1 – with BetVictor – Missed the cut here last year and while he isn’t playing great of late, he is a different player to the one that turned up here last year and he will want to do well in front of home support

Longer odds:

Try Matti Schmid 125/1 SpreadEx – Missed the cut at the Byron Nelson after his fourth-place finish at the PGA Championship, but I expect him to be challenging again this week
