The European Tour now moves to South Africa for their Open Championship and pitches up at
Stellenbosch Golf Club. Founded in 1904 the club celebrated its centenary in 2004. This is the 4th oldest golf club in South Africa, and expanded from a 9 hole course to an 18 hole championship course designed by Ken Elkin in 1953.
Situated at the foot of the majestic Helderberg mountains on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, the course is well protected from the wind when compared to those on the Cape Peninsula, something of a positive considering the relatively narrow fairways lined with a variety tree species here.
The expanded course has fairly flat terrain with a few gentle changes in elevation and water coming into play on only four holes: 2nd, 5th, 12th and 18th. The start is tough with the first four holes all measuring over 400-yards from the tips.
The par 5, 8th hole is a great test where an absolutely straight drive is needed. Known locally as “Snakes and Grapes” – a slice sends shots into the bush on the right and a hook results in a lost ball in the vineyards on the left.
The course has hosted some of South Africa’s most prestigious golf tournaments, including the 1999 South African Open and five South African Masters tournaments.
