The final major of the year is upon us and I personally feel that the oldest major of them all is a fitting finale. I played Royal Portrush in May and it is in wonderful condition and I am sure the 153rd edition of this wonderful championship is going to be one of the best yet.

When I was there you could feel the excitement in the air and that was two months before the players arrived. There are some great new editions to the original course, the 7th is one of the newer holes that have been woven into the original Harry Colt design for the championship and overseen by golf architect Martin Ebert of Mackenzie and Ebert.

For me the par 4, 17th hole will prove pivotal, my playing partner and myself nearly drove the green from the white tees which measure 426-yards and while the championship tees will measure 473-yards it doesn’t play that length as the hole is downhill. There will be a lot of players in the field – depending on the weather of course – who could drive this hole if its dry and still even from the tips. Can you image a player two shots behind holing a tee shot on the 17th on the final day, I wonder what the odds on a hole-in-one on that hole are!



My tips to Win:

Shooting all four rounds in the 60s is probably the best warm up Scottie Scheffler 6/1 – AKBets – could have had at the Scottish Open. The PGA Champion will be looking to add the claret jug to his Major Championship trophy cabinet

I am sure Rory McIlroy 15/2 – with AKBets – would have liked to have won his second Scottish Open, but he will be another player happy with his golf game coming into this week. I don’t think Rory will have to worry about form, so much as being able to control his emotions this week. We see how much it meant to him last time the event was played here when he broke down in tears after missing the cut.

He may not have won this year on the LIV Tour, but Jon Rahm 13/1 – with AKBets – hasn’t been outside the Top 11 on the LIV Tour this season and comes into this week on the back of his second runner-up finish. Jon has finish inside the Top 15 in all three Major Championships played so far with Top 10 finishes in the last two

Each-way tips

Coming back into form at just the right time is former US Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick 50/1 – with PaddyPower – who had his third Top 20 finish on the bounce and his second Top 10 with his fourth-place finish at the Scottish Open. Matt had a Top 20 finish here last time the event was held at Royal Portrush and I am sure he will be happy with his current trajectory

Two wins on the PGA Tour and two other Top 5s should see Sepp Straka 55/1 – with BetVictor – looking forward to this week. Sepp had a Top 25 in some horrible conditions at Royal Troon last year and he will have to cope with the weather again this year, but I feel he is ready to make that step up and challenge at Major Championships

Outside tip:

One player that will feel that Royal Portrush owes him is last years runner-up Justin Rose 66/1 – with PaddyPower – a final round 70 at the 2019 Open would have seen Justin taking the runner-up spot again, but a final round 79 see him dropout of contention and down the leaderboard. Rose comes into this week after a sixth-place finish at the Scottish Open and I am sure that is exactly what he was looking for in preparation for The Open
