The PGA Tour now moves back to Texas but this time heading for Dallas and the newly named CJ Cup Byron Nelson which will be played for the third year at TPC Craig Ranch. Designed by 1973 Open Champion Tom Weiskopf and to be honest he probably wouldn’t put it among his best designs and that is more down to the topography and the remit he was probably given.

The course is relatively flat and is routed round Rowlett Creek, which meanders through this long, narrow plot of land. The course is all about distance with seven of the par fours weighing in at over 450 yards, with the toughest probably being the 493 yard, 12th. The bunkers don’t really come into play off the tee, but your approach shot needs to carry the river which protects the front of the green while also avoiding the bunker running the entire right side of the putting surface.

The courses signature hole is probably the drivable par 4, 14th hole weighing in at 330 yards, the tee shot is slightly downhill with water on the left and a half dozen bunkers around the green. This is followed by the courses best par 3 measuring 216 yards with a pond on your left and sand on your right and of course if you finish in the sand on the right, you are faced with a bunker shot back towards that water on the left!

My tips to Win:

No real surprise going with Scottie Scheffler 14/5 – with BetFred – and he will be desperate to get a win before heading into the PGA Championship in two weeks time. Scottie hasn’t been outside the Top 25 in his eight starts this year and has five Top 10s, three of which have been Top 5s including a runner-up finish. But Scottie won’t be satisfied until he starts winning again

It’s strange how Jordan Spieth 18/1 – with BetFred – doesn’t receive as much attention on his need to add the PGA Championship for him to complete golfs Grand Slam as Rory gets at The Masters each year. But Jordan is another player that needs to get a win, with his last one coming back in 2022 at the RBC Heritage. He does have a Top 10 and a runner-up finish in this event since it moved to TPC Craig Ranch

Another player who has a runner-up finish in this event is Si Woo Kim 33/1 – with UniBet – two years ago and he only started playing in the event after COVID. He followed up that runner-up finish with a Top 15 last year. It has been a bit of a stop/start season for Si Woo, he also had a bit of a meltdown at the RBC Heritage when in contention on the final day. But I expect him to be challenging again this week

Each-way tips:

A runner-up finish at the weekend with his brother should see Rasmus Højgaard 50/1 – with UniBet – arrive in confident mood this week. Rasmus started his first full season on the PGA Tour well with two Top 25 finishes and then lost his way a bit. He has all the ability to do really well on the PGA Tour and I think these could turn out to be great odds for the Dane

There has been better consistency to Jake Knapp 55/1 – with BetFred – this year, than last, but no less entertaining to watch. Jake has five Top 25 finishes this year, two of which have been Top 10s with the latest coming at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at weekend when he paired up with Frankie Capan III. Jake played in this event for the first time last year and opened up with a pair of 64s and I am sure he is looking forward to being back here this week

Outside tip:

It has been a tough year for Michael Thorbjornsen 80/1 – with Bet365 – with six missed cuts from his first nine starts, but a runner-up finish at the Corales Punta Cana Championship, which he followed up with a Top 5 finish at the weekends Zurich Classic when pairing up with Karl Vilips carding a third round 61. That should see him arrive here in buoyant mood

Longer odds:

Try Hayden Springer 150/1 – with SkyBet

As always good luck
