Golf Monthly is the market leading golfing magazine in the UK. It's a lively and welcoming read that is targeted at good golfers who are regular players - and keen to get even better.
With over 100 years of heritage and authority behind it, it represents the real 'voice of golf' with leading columnists, top players and unrivalled coverage of equipment and instruction.
This week sees the return of the European Tour and a new sponsor and venue. This is my review of the Trump International Golf Links.
After warming up on the very large practice ground and beautiful short game area I head to the first tee, as you pass by the ultra large undulating putting green you soon realise that no expense has been spared on constructing the perfect practice facilities.
But it’s only when I met the starter on the tee and stare down the first fairway, it’s at that point you know you are about to play a special course. Very large dunes surround you and the fairway just nestles in the middle of them. The opening hole is a par 5 and gives you a really good chance at starting with a birdie. The fairways are very generous but you really need to stay clear of the bunkers they are deep with very steep faces and rightly so they will cost you a shot.
The shape and sculpture of the holes are very well designed and Martin Hawtree has done a wonderful job, but it’s the views from each hole, you really will be taking out your phone on every hole and the good news for golfers is there are no hidden surprises, no blind shots, every challenge of each hole is laid out before you and played from an elevated tee.
My tips to Win:
With four Top 25 finishes in his last five starts including a runner-up finish at the Scottish Open and notching up his first European Tour victory earlier in the year Marco Penge 14/1 with Bet365 will be looking to get back to challenging again this week after missing the cut at The Open Championship
Another player that stepped onto the winners podium for the first time on the European Tour this year is Kristoffer Reitan 18/1 with Bet365 and to be honest I think that was the first of many for this young lad from Norway. Kristoffer also has two runner-up finishes and had a solid Open Championship
After two Top 4 finishes including a runner-up Ewen Ferguson 25/1 with BetFred went off the boil and I am sure missing the cut at the Scottish Open stung. But a few weeks rest and practice and no doubt spurred on by missing the Open Championship, I expect Ewen to be back challenging this week
Each-way tips:
When it comes to links golf then Royal Liverpool prodigy Matthew Jordan 35/1 with BetFred will surely be looking forward to this week. Matthew went off the boil over the last few weeks after a couple of Top 10 finishes. But like Ewen a few weeks rest and practice and a solid Open Championship I expect him to be in the thick of it come Sunday
Theres been a lot of ups and downs for Richie Ramsay 50/1 with BetFred this year with a couple of fourth-place finishes and two other Top 25s, but he also has six missed cuts. But this is the type of event in front of home support, that he will want to play well in
When it comes to playing consistent golf then Wenyi Ding 50/1 with SpreadEx has only missed three cuts from his 20 starts and has seven Top 25 finishes. Wenyi is still waiting for his first European Tour victory, but on his current form he should make the cut and if he can get that putter working I expect him to challenge
