This event in 2020 see the resumption of the PGA Tour during lockdown, the Charles Schwab Challenge will probably always be remembered for that statistic, and of course the stunning Colonial Country Club which the event is played over. The history of CCC is quite interesting as it came about through one man’s crusade to bring bent grass greens to Texas.

That man was Mr Marvin Leonard, who was so intent on bringing bent grass greens to his then golf club, the River Crest GC, that he offered to pay for two or three greens to be dug up and reseeded with bent grass. If the experiment did not work, he would then pay for them to be dug up again and reseeded back to Bermuda grass!

The president of River Crest GC at the time grew so weary of Marvin’s insistence about the greens that he told him "Marvin, if you're so sold on Bentgrass, why don't you go build your own golf course and put them in?" That became Marvin Leonard’s Eureka moment and the idea of the Colonial Golf Club was born.

Mr Leonard then commissioned John Bredemus of Texas and Perry Maxwell of Oklahoma to both submit five alternative course designs but after looking at the designs he asked them to submit five more. From the initial designs Marvin Leonard put together a composite course from which sprang the Colonial Country Club.

By 1935 the golf course and the first clubhouse neared completion and less than 10 years later the Colonial Country Club held its first US Open Championship in 1941. By 1946 the Colonial had its own tournament, ‘The Colonial Invitational’ with the inaugural event being won by none other than Ben Hogan, who retained the title the following year and won the event five times in his career.

My tips to Win:

No surprises with the new PGA Champion Scottie Scheffler 5/2 – with BetFred – who will be looking to make it three wins in his last three starts, playing in front of his adopted home state of Texas fans. Scottie has two runner-up finishes here and will be desperate to add this to his ever expanding trophy collection

Having said that born and bred Texan Jordan Spieth 25/1 – with SpreadEx – will also be looking to play well in front of his home state fans. And after missing the cut at the weekend, he will want to get back to challenging asap in a tournament he has won before and had three runner-up finishes

Another past champion of this event is Daniel Berger 25/1 – with BetFred – who won here in a play-off against Collin Morikawa. Daniel would have expected more of himself at the PGA Championship as he was on a run of only being outside of the Top 25 three times all year from his twelve starts, but I expect to see him challenging again this week

Each-way tips:

One player that will definitely take a lot of positives from his final round 65 at the PGA Championship is Harris English 40/1 – with BetFred – which took him up into the runner-up position. Harris has had a runner-up finish here and I am sure he will be looking forward to being in the heat of the battle again here this week

I am sure JT Poston 45/1 – with BetVictor – will have been disappointed with his final round 73 at the PGA Championship, but I am sure once he has had time to reflect he will take a lot of positives from his Top 5 finish. JT is now on a run of four Top 25 finishes from his last four starts and will be looking to improve on his Top 15 finish here last year

This weeks defending champion is Davis Riley 55/1 – with BetFred – who will be in buoyant mood after his runner-up finish at the PGA Championship at the weekend and will be looking forward to defending his title this week

Outside tips

It has been a bit of an up and down season for Harry Hall 70/1 – with BetFred – who started the year with three Top 25 finishes including two Top 10s, but then went off the boil. But, two Top 20s in his last two starts, including the PGA Championship at weekend shows he is coming back into form. Harry had a third-place finish here two years ago, so will have a few positive vibes when he arrives here this week

As always good luck
