The PGA Tour moves from Japan to Mexico and El Cardonal at Diamante which is the first designed golf course that Tiger Woods completed. Characterised by wide fairways, plenty of bunkers, and large undulated greens. Though there are some short par fours, you'll rarely be tempted to hit anything but driver on the non-par threes given the width of the fairways.

Influenced by the old-style courses of Southern California where Tiger Woods grew up, he created a course that brings back the need for strategy. He stated “I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices. Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. I love this kind of golf.”

El Cardonal sits on a broad landscape dotted by cacti, palo verde trees and scrubby desert flora, with dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean, natural arroyos, mature vegetation, native dunes, and where the land drops 240 feet along the mile-long stretch from the 17th tee to the 3rd fairway.

The fairways are wide, with rustic sand traps scattered in the middle of the ideal landing areas. Players have plenty of room to navigate their way around, or over, the hazards, and the short grass gives players plenty of options around the greens.

The north-south direction of the arroyos – the steep-sided gullies formed by fast-flowing water – is entirely a function of the natural topography. They run in the direction that water flows. With the course primarily a resort layout, the design team decided to build the majority of holes on a north-south axis to prevent forced carries across the arroyos, which in many cases are 100 yards or longer, which enhanced playability for holiday golfers.

My tips to Win:

With three runner-up finishes in his last five starts Max Greyserman 18/1 – with Bet365 – will be itching to get one of the fall events series over the line and with this weeks field he certainly has a chance to notch up his first PGA Tour victory

Three Top 16 finishes in this last three starts and two Top 5 finishes in his last two starts Matti Schmid 25/1 – with Bet365 – will be looking forward to this week and I expect him to be challenging again

It was a strange start to the Fall Series for Harris English 30/1 – with Bet365 – with two missed cuts. But normal service has resumed with two Top 10 finishes in his last two starts and I expect him to be in the thick of it again come Sunday

Each-way tips:

This week’s defending champion is Erik Van Rooyen 35/1 – with BetVictor – who’s played in two Fall Series events so far, but while he has made the cut in both of those, he has yet to challenge. Erik has played in this event twice with one missed cut and one win, but I expect him to put in a strong defence of his title

With a win already in the Fall Series of events, which he followed up with another Top 15 finish Patton Kizzire 66/1 – with BetVictor – hasn’t really played great in the last two events and missed the cut at the Shriners Children’s Open. But Patton is a past champion of this event although played on another course, but I feel he will challenge again this week.

Outside tip:

A Top 10 finish in this event last year for Nate Lashley 80/1 – with PaddyPower – which was played over the El Cardonal course, should see the New Englander looking forward to this week after breaking into the Top 20 for the first time in his last outing on the Fall Series

Longer odds:

Try Alejandro Tosti 110/1 – with BetVictor

As always good luck
