It’s the third major of the year and the revamped Donald Ross Pinehurst number two course. Who can forget that shoot-out between Phil Mickelson and Payne Stewart here back in 1999. Unfortunately Stewart’s untimely death means that we won't see the lad from Springfield, Missouri here this week, only the statue erected in his honour.

Donald J. Ross made the trip from Scotland to America in 1899, shortly after his arrival James W. Tufts – who was the visionary behind the Pinehurst Resort – commissioned Ross, who ended up staying on at Pinehurst for another 48 years!

Ross, who had designed Royal Dornoch with their famed domed greens – which was soon to become his hallmark – became a big part of the famed Pinehurst No.2 course which opened for play in 1907, and has become the standard by which all other great golf courses around the world are judged. The greens are small and have fall-offs around the edges, and a vivid imagination is required to make sure you get down in two putts.

But it's not all about the greens, Pinehurst number 2 has to be one of the most finely balanced golf courses in the world, with the 5th, 9th and 16th holes taking most of the plaudits.

Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw were given the task of updating the No2 course in 2020 with a brief of taking it back to its 1940s design. And with aerial photographs to work from the guys have done a fantastic job, and with the TV coverage this week Pinehurst number 2 will once again take its rightful place back among the worlds top golf courses.

My tips to Win:

No one is hotter coming into this event than Scottie Scheffler 7/2 – with AKBets – who now has five wins, two runners-up, two other Top 5s and has only been outside the Top 10 once in his thirteen starts and that was still a Top 20 finish!

Arriving as the current PGA Champion is Xander Schauffele 14/1 – with AKBets – who also has two runner-up finishes including at The Players Championship and three other Top 5 finishes and has only been outside the Top 25 once in his fourteen starts

Coming back into form at just the right time is Collin Morikawa 16/1 – with AKBets – who has had seven Top 25 finishes from his last seven starts with four of those being Top 5s, three of which have come in his last three starts including his runner-up finish at the weekend

Each-way tips:

It looks like the 2022 US Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick 50/1 – with AKBets – has also hit form coming into this week. Matt has been struggling lately to challenge, but still has five Top 25 finishes from his last eight starts and his Top 5 finish at a very tough Memorial Tournament at the weekend will give him a lot of positive energy as he arrives at Pinehurst

I am going to stick with Hideki Matsuyama 50/1 – with AKBets – who was one of only six players that shot under par for the final round at the Memorial Tournament at the weekend, which see him move up the leaderboard and into the Top 10

Outside tip:

Four Top 25 finishes in his last six starts including a runner-up a couple of weeks ago is Keegan Bradley 75/1 – with BetVictor – Keegan had a Top 5 finish when the US Open was last held at Pinehurst so will also have some positive vibes when he arrives here this week

Longer odds:

Try Billy Horschel 200/1 – with AKBets

As always good luck
