The European Tour stays in Africa but now moves to South African and the Eastern Cape, to a course that has created much debate as to whether it is a true links course or not.
The course opened for play in December 2006 and was quickly voted the Best New Course in South Africa in 2007 and has consistently been ranked as one of the top 10 golf courses in South Africa. But according to George Peper and Malcolm Campbell authors of the “True Links” bible, which features 246 links golf courses worldwide, St Francis Links isn’t among them.
The course is a Jack Nicklaus signature course and is situated an hour’s drive along the coast from Port Elizabeth. The course lies a little inland from the coast but does display many links like traits, the tees are not artificially elevated above the playing surface and the holes follow the topography, which is laid out on rugged, tumbling, sandy terrain and weaves through the dunes in a design that has no two holes are alike and which are mostly removed entirely from each other.
Several of the holes have water hazards that need to be negotiated and strands of trees and clumps of bushes appear throughout the layout, which of course negates its claim to be an example of a pure links golf course

My tips to Win:
I will be sticking with a couple of players this week and first up is Thriston Lawrence 18/1 with SkyBet who although finished inside the Top 20 at the Magical Kenya Open I am sure will be disappointed especially considering the field. Thriston had a Top 15 finish here last year and had a Top 20 on the Sunshine Tours Vodacom Origins of Golf, which is also played at St Frances Links
I will also be sticking with Ewen Ferguson 20/1 with UniBet who at least made the Top 10 at the Magical Kenya Open shooting all four rounds in the 60s. But, like Thriston I am sure he feels he should have been challenging to win with that field. Ewen had a Top 5 finish here last year and I expect him to be in the thick of it again come Sunday
A player who was on my list last week but didnt make our cut was Connor Syme 22/1 with Bet365 who went on to have a Top 10 finish. It has been a steady season for Connor after two Top 20 finishes in his first two starts, he had slightly gone off the boil until the weekend. Syme had a Top 15 here last year and I expect him to be challenging this week
Each-way tips:
It has not been a great start to the season for Adrian Otaegui 35/1 – with BetFred – with only two Top 20 finishes from his seven starts and his first Top 5 coming at the weekend at the Magical Kenya Open, he also has three missed cuts in that run. I do feel Adrian is too good a golfer and how he played last week will see him arrive here this week looking to keep that momentum going
After getting off to such a great start to the season with four Top 10 finishes in his first four starts Jayden Schaper 40/1 with UniBet has slightly gone off the boil with only two Top 25 finishes from his last five starts, which included a missed cut in Bahrain. Jayden has had two Top 10 finish in the SA PGA Championship that have been held over the St Francis Links, one being a Top 5 in 2021. He also had a sixth-place finish at the Vodacom Origins of Golf that is also held over this link. I expect being back here and those positive memories may just help him get his season back on track
Outside tip:
A runner-up finish here last year should see Adri Arnaus 80/1/ with SkyBet looking forward to being back here this week. It has not been a great start to the season for Adri having missed three missed cuts on the bounce. But, a few weeks off working on his golf game and being back here, I think these could turn out to be very good odds
