Jack Nicklaus must have been ecstatic when he was given this 500 acres of land to work with in Kentucky back in the 1980s, with it’s varied terrain, water and plenty of space, it was a golf course designers dream. In fact there was so much space that 40 possible course designs were considered before construction began.
Valhalla opened for play in 1986, with the front nine designed in what the Americans like to call “links-style” with fairly flat rolling fairways. There was lots of earth moving to create the visually appealing run of holes, but also to protect the fairways from storm damage. There are over 60 bunkers scattered throughout the course and water comes into play on a half dozen of the holes.
The back nine on the other hand is a much more traditional tree-lined layout, with Valhalla’s signature hole coming midway through the back nine, the 355 Yard Par 4, 13th - this dogleg left gains its status due to the island green that is supported by a wall of rocks and surrounded by water.
Who can forget Valhalla and Boo Weekley and his horse antics on the first tee at the 2008 Ryder Cup and Rory McIlroy's win the last time the event was held here.
It is hard to disagree with the bookies on the favourites this week, first up is Scottie Scheffler 9/2 – with BetVictor – four wins and a runner-up in his last five starts, world number one and reigning Masters Champion
Also coming into this week with multiple wins in his last two starts is Rory McIlroy 15/2 – with BetVictor – who won his second PGA Championship and his last Major Championship victory at Valhalla back in 2014
And another player coming into this week on the back of a win on the Liv Tour is Brooks Koepka 16/1 – with BetVictor – who is also this weeks defending champion
Each-way tips:
I am going to stick with Max Homa 35/1 – with BetVictor – who seems to be slowly coming back into form and notched up his third Top 24 and second Top 10 finish in his last four starts, one of which was his third-place finish at The Masters
I did tip Hideki Matsuyama 55/1 – with BetVictor – last week, but he had to withdraw from the Wells Fargo Championship due to back issues. I am hoping that was just precautionary in preparation for this week and not wanting to miss out on playing in a Major Championship. But just incase he does have to pull out again my replacement pick will be Joaquin Niemann 40/1 – with BetVictor
Outside tip:
Five Top 20 finishes from his last six starts and coming into this week on the back of a Top 10 finish at the Wells Fargo Championship is Sepp Straka 90/1 – with BetVictor – Sepp has also experienced playing under extreme pressure at last years Ryder Cup matches, which I think could help him coming down the stretch on the back nine come Sunday
