Golf Monthly is the market leading golfing magazine in the UK. It's a lively and welcoming read that is targeted at good golfers who are regular players - and keen to get even better.
With over 100 years of heritage and authority behind it, it represents the real 'voice of golf' with leading columnists, top players and unrivalled coverage of equipment and instruction.
The PGA Tour splits in two with the Wells Fargo Championship being an elevated event, a spot has opened up for the new Myrtle Beach Classic, which will be played at the Robert Trent Jones Sr designed Dunes Golf and Beach Club, which opened for play in 1948 and has since seen redesigns in 1978 and 1993.
In fact since the early part of this millennium the club have had Rees Jones and his associate Steve Weisser working alongside long-term course superintendent Steve Hamilton on course improvements. Greens have been brought back to their original size, new tees introduced and a state-of-the-art irrigation system has been installed.
The course itself is located a block from the beach with strong ocean breezes playing a big part in how you play the course. But it is far from being a links course and is more of a parkland/woodland course with marshland elements, the 9th being the only hole where a player catches a glimpse of the Atlantic.
Most holes are lined with old oaks trees and water comes into play via ponds and marshes on more than half the holes. The elevated green complexes are extremely challenging as a result of large and deep Augusta white sand bunkers.
The course has four wonderfully designed par threes, among them the 12th hole which is all carry over a salt-water marsh. The finishing hole is a beautifully designed long par four with a green protected by a pond at the front.
The Dunes Golf and Beach Club makes a strong argument as the best course in Myrtle Beach. The conditioning is excellent and the parkland setting, although it would be nice to have more ocean views from the course to complement those strong sea breezes!
