Golf Monthly is the market leading golfing magazine in the UK. It's a lively and welcoming read that is targeted at good golfers who are regular players - and keen to get even better.
With over 100 years of heritage and authority behind it, it represents the real 'voice of golf' with leading columnists, top players and unrivalled coverage of equipment and instruction.
The Mexico Open was first played back in 1944 and notable winners of the tournament have been Roberto De Vicenzo who won the title three times, Tony Lema, Lee Trevino and Stewart Cink are all double winners and Ben Crenshaw is also a past champion.
This years event will be played at the Greg Norman designed signature course at the Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta resort. The Norman course runs by the Ameca River and can only be accessed by the worlds longest golf cart suspension bridge. Unlike a lot of resort courses the Norman course isn’t surrounded by lots of properties and sits on its own little parcel of land.
There are 15 lakes, 98 bunkers, huge sandy waste areas, indigenous vegetation, large undulating greens which are well protected by some vast bunkers. The greens range in size from average to huge with plenty of slope and contours – which includes tiers and valleys – and are raised with lots of false fronts. The course also has some forced carries and from the tips weighs in at 7,287 yards.
Notable holes to look out for are; the opening hole which is a 398 yard par 4 risk and reward hole with the fairway horseshoeing around a lake with 2 big bunkers in the landing zone, three more guarding the raised and contoured green, plus 3 large oblong shaped bunkers on the left front side of the green.
The 15th is a challenging 459-yard par 4 with water running from tee to green, there are also 8 bunkers, including a huge waste bunker on the left and a bunker in the middle of the fairway, and then there are 4 more to contend with that surround the green.

My tips to Win:
It has not been a great start to the year for this week’s defending champion Tony Finau 7/1 – with UniBet – although he did have a Top 20 finish at the weekend. Tony had a runner-up in this events inaugural year. But, it is obviously a course Tony enjoys playing and suits his eye and I expect him to be in the thick of it again come Sunday
Coming into this week on the back of a win at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship is Thorbjørn Oleson 28/1 – UniBet – who has two other Top 25 finishes from his three starts on the European Tour this year. And with the amount of European players in the field this week I am sure he will feel right at home
After getting off to a good start at the WM Phoenix Open Ryan Fox 35/1 – with Bet365 – fell away in his last two rounds, but I feel this is a course that will suit his game and I expect him to challenge this week
Each-way tip:
Another player that enjoys teeing it up at the Vidanta Vallarta course is Brandon Wu 40/1 – with UniBet – who has a runner-up and a third-place finish from his two starts in this event
It has not been a great start to this years PGA Tour for Aaron Rai 50/1 – with BetFred – with two missed cuts from his four starts, but he did have a Top 25 finish here the first time the event was played. And like some of the other European Tour players I have picked, I think that sense of feeling at home and seeing families faces may just help him this week
Outside tip:
No real surprise that Greyson Sigg 110/1 – with BetVictor – who has two missed cuts from his last two starts is this far down the betting odds. But Greyson has played in both events that have been held here and has progressed up the leaderboard each year and he had a Top 25 finish last year. It’s not the strongest field this week and having had some relative success in his previous starts I think these may turn out to be good odds
Outside tip:
Deciding not to defend his title in Kenya this week is Jorge Campillo 150/1 – with Bet365 – and he comes into this event on the back of a Top 5 finish at the Qatar Masters
As always good luck
