The European and PGA Tour comes amalgamate this week and head to Scotland and the Tom Doak designed Renaissance Club in North Berwick, nestled between Muirfield and Archerfield. Tom said of the land he was given to work with To work in Scotland is a dream for any golf architect. The property for The Renaissance Club is unexpected, with sandy soils and windy conditions, combined with a variety of woods, gentle hills and open links, will give us the chance to build a special golf course with a character all its own.
The word tough is mentioned quite a lot when it comes to The Renaissance Club that opened for play in 2008, the club has since acquired some land from the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers to build three new holes and brings some wonderful views of the Firth of Forth.
The course is relatively flat with plenty of fairway undulations but it’s the greens and their many contours that make being in the correct section of the green very important when playing your approach shot.
The course really kicks into gear at the seventh as you head out towards the shore and the newer holes. The 8th is the hardest hole on the course with the green sitting next to one of the many drystone walls that permeate the course. Measuring 7,300 yards from the tips with lots of very long carries to reach the fairway if the wind is up this week it will be a beast of a test for the players.
TV while be showing a lot of the new holes and the pick of the bunch is the 10th which doglegs around the cliffs and offers some fantastic views. The longer hitters will be relishing this risk and reward hole, but anything left and its 3-off the tee.

My tips to Win:
This weeks defending champion is Rory McIlroy 15/2 with Bet365 and will want to put that US Open loss behind him before heading into next weeks Open Championship
Another past champion of this event is the new PGA Champion Xander Schauffele 17/2 with Bet365 who has only been outside the Top 25 once this season from sixteen starts and has eleven Top 10 finishes two of which were runner-up finishes
Tommy Fleetwood 22/1 with Bet365 lost in a play-off of this event back in 2020 and has two Top 10 finishes in his last two starts in this event. Tommy won earlier in the year on the European Tour and has only been outside the Top 25 twice in his last nine starts on the PGA Tour
Each-way tips:
The 2021 winner of this event was Min Woo Lee 33/1 with UniBet who comes into this week on the back of his runner-up finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and has only been outside the Top 25 once in his last six starts on the PGA Tour
Another past champion of this event is Aaron Rai 50/1 with Bet365 who I didnt expect to be this far down the betting odds. Aaron followed up his runner-up finish a couple of weeks ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic with a Top 10 finish at the weekend and while he may be disappointed he didnt challenge on Sunday, he comes into this week with his golf game in great shape
Outside tip:
I was even more surprised to see Tom McKibbin 100/1 with UniBet this far down the betting odds especially after his recent runner-up finish at the Italian Open which made it his sixth Top 10 finish in his last ten starts
