Driving through the Punta Cana estate takes me back to when I was here back in late 2008. I was taken round the Tom Fazio-designed course, but at that time the grass had just been seeded. Those memories trigger my excitement as we turn up the road and past the practice ground on my left, which is probably where you will be dropped off. But first I have a few people to meet, and as I’m shaking hands I can see the course just behind the pro shop – it’s just tugging at me.
I jump in the buggy with my caddie and it’s down to the well-appointed practice ground to loosen up, then it’s off to the first tee. Now, I have to say that if you miss this fairway you should head back down to the range! It’s wide and even from the back tees at 433-yards, it’s a nice opening hole – the sea is not in full view but you get some tantalising glimpses, and when the wind blows I am sure you will be able to feel it.
The second is the first of the four great par 3s, and there really isn’t a weak one on the course, with water coming into play on one and the sea on two. With 239 yards between me and the pin this is no pushover, playing to a raised green protected by five deep bunkers and a waste area that runs all the way along the right hand side.
With a runner-up finish here last year Nicolai H๘jgaard 16/1 with Bet365 will be looking to overcome his Georgia blues and the 12th hole at Augusta National by getting right back in the thick of battle come Sunday
For someone with his skill set I am sure Billy Horschel 20/1 with Bet365 will have hated every minute of sitting at home while his peers were teeing it up at Augusta last week. And I am sure he will be trying to make sure he doesnt miss out again next year
A past champion of this event when it was a web.com tournament is Nate Lashley 35/1 with Bet365 who has since gone on to have two other Top 15 finishes here including a fourth-place. Nate had a third-place finish earlier in the year at a tough Torrey Pines and has had two other Top 25 finishes, although he also has five missed cuts from his ten starts this year
Each-way tips:
With two runner-up finishes in this event it is safe to say Sam Ryder 50/1 with LiveScoreBet enjoys teeing up on the Corales course. It has not been a great year for Sam so far with only two Top 25 finishes from his ten starts, but I think being back here may be just what he needs
It has also not been a great year for Ben Martin 50/1 with UniBet so far, but he seemed to find something at the Valero Texas Open two weeks ago that gave him his first Top 10 finish of the year. And coming back to an event where Ben has had a runner-up and two Top 10 finishes from his four starts here, could be the confidence boost he needs to be in the thick of it come the weekend.
Outside tip:
After watching his compatriot pick up the Farmers Insurance Open Martin Trainer 100/1 with UniBet will be looking to follow in his footsteps in the Dominican Republic this week. Martin has two Top 25 finishes here in his last two starts, one being a seventh-place finish
