This event in 2020 see the resumption of the PGA Tour during lockdown, the Charles Schwab Challenge will probably always be remembered for that statistic, and of course the stunning Colonial Country Club which the event is played over. The history of CCC is quite interesting as it came about through one man’s crusade to bring bent grass greens to Texas.
That man was Mr Marvin Leonard, who was so intent on bringing bent grass greens to his then golf club, the River Crest GC, that he offered to pay for two or three greens to be dug up and reseeded with bent grass. If the experiment did not work, he would then pay for them to be dug up again and reseeded back to Bermuda grass!
The president of River Crest GC at the time grew so weary of Marvin’s insistence about the greens that he told him "Marvin, if you're so sold on Bentgrass, why don't you go build your own golf course and put them in?" That became Marvin Leonard’s Eureka moment and the idea of the Colonial Golf Club was born.
Mr Leonard then commissioned John Bredemus of Texas and Perry Maxwell of Oklahoma to both submit five alternative course designs but after looking at the designs he asked them to submit five more. From the initial designs Marvin Leonard put together a composite course from which sprang the Colonial Country Club.
By 1935 the golf course and the first clubhouse neared completion and less than 10 years later the Colonial Country Club held its first US Open Championship in 1941. By 1946 the Colonial had its own tournament, ‘The Colonial Invitational’ with the inaugural event being won by none other than Ben Hogan, who retained the title the following year and won the event five times in his career.
At the moment if Scottie Scheffler 3/1 – with PaddyPower – is teeing up then we have to tip him, he has played that well over the last couple of months. I also feel he will want to get back on track after last week’s problems, which seem to derail him in the third round of the PGA Championship. But I expect him to be back at it come Sunday especially in his home state, in front of a partisan crowd
Another player that will be getting plenty of backing from the crowd is Jordan Spieth 22/1 – with UniBet – who has a win here and three runner-up finishes
It’s great to see Tony Finau 33/1 – with PaddyPower – slowly coming back into form and while he may not be too happy with his weekend’s work at the PGA Championship, his Top 20 finish made it his seventh Top 25 this year from thirteen starts
Each-way tips:
A final round 64 at the PGA Championship see Billy Horschel 60/1 – with BetVictor – storm up the leaderboard fifteen-places and into the Top 10. Billy missed the cut after his recent win at the Corales Punta Cana Championship, but he now seems to have settled down and I think these are good odds for the Floridian
I am sure Aaron Rai 66/1 – with UniBet – will be disappointed with his final two rounds at the PGA Championship after getting himself into a great position going into the weekend. But Aaron is coming back to an event where he has had Top 15 finish last year, and after his recent Top 5 finish at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson I think he will be challenging again this week
Outside tip:
Coming into this week in buoyant mood on the back of his Top 10 finish at the PGA Championship is Robert MacIntyre 110/1 – with BetVictor – and that made it his third Top 15 finish in his last four starts on the PGA Tour
