Golf Monthly is the market leading golfing magazine in the UK. It's a lively and welcoming read that is targeted at good golfers who are regular players - and keen to get even better.
With over 100 years of heritage and authority behind it, it represents the real 'voice of golf' with leading columnists, top players and unrivalled coverage of equipment and instruction.
The European Tour starts its new season and moves to Australia for a co-sanctioned event with the Australasia Tour that holds two of its biggest events over the next two weeks. First up is the Australian PGA Championship which is now in its 88th year.
Royal Queensland Golf Club will be hosting the event for the second year in succession. Formed by a group of Brisbane golfers in 1920 and designed by Carnegie Clark, three-time Australian Open champion, the holes were laid out on a mangrove swamp at Parker Island on the banks of the Brisbane River. The course was opened for play by the Governor-General Lord Forster in 1921 and King George V gave the club its Royal Charter in 1921.
Dr Alister MacKenzie of Augusta national fame is said to have advised on green and bunker modifications during his visit to the country in 1926, commenting that the course “might even compare favourably with some of the British championship courses… full of very fine golfing features,”
In 2005, the Queensland Government decided to build a second Gateway Bridge over the Brisbane River, which impacted on the original course. The new Royal Queensland layout was designed by Mike Clayton and construction of the new Championship course was completed in December 2007.
Clayton extensively reconfigured the layout losing some of the original holes, but it gave the club the opportunity to completely redesign the entire course, effectively creating a brand new course. Transforming the layout into a strategic test of golf that holds the players attention from first tee until the final green. Clayton removed trees and designed distinctive bunkering and the rerouting of holes has helped breath new life into the course.

My tips to Win:
This week’s defending champion is Min Woo Lee 8/1 – with BetVictor – who has had a strange first season on the PGA Tour, he does have two runner-up finishes, but in what you would class as second division events and has also had six Top 25s, but he has not really challenged in any of the bigger events. But with this field this week I expect him to be right in the thick of it come Sunday
No wins for Cameron Smith 9/1 – with BetVictor – on the Liv Tour this season, but he does have three runner-up finishes and did have a Top 10 finish at the Masters. Cam will be looking to make it his fourth Australian PGA Title on a course he has won on before
It must have been a frustrating end to the season for Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen 22/1 – with Bet365 – after winning three times on the European Challenge Tour and taking the runner-up spot at the Rolex Grand Final, but not being able to compete in any of the European Tours end of season main events. Rasmus will be looking to get his first full European Tour season off with a bang and I expect him to be right in the heat of the battle come the weekend.
Each-way tips:
Coming into this week on the back of three Top 20 finishes in his last five starts is Adrien Saddier 35/1 – with BetVictor – who shot all four rounds in the 60s at the Abu Dhabi Championship, and will be teeing it up here this week with plenty of positive vibes about his golf game at the moment
With two Top 20 finishes in this event over the last two years, one a sixth-place finish over the Royal Queensland course David Micheluzzi 40/1 – with BetVictor – will fancy his chances of being right in the thick of the battle again come Sunday afternoon
Outside tip:
Third on the Australian Tour OOM with a win, a runner-up and three other Top 5 finishes from his ten starts is Elvis Smylie 125/1 – with BetVictor – who will fancy his chances of causing an upset this week. Elvis has played in this event the last two years at Royal Queensland GC and had a twelfth-place finish two years ago
