The PGA Tour moves from Japan to Mexico and El Cardonal at Diamante which is the first designed golf course that Tiger Woods completed. Characterised by wide fairways, plenty of bunkers, and large undulated greens. Though there are some short par fours, you'll rarely be tempted to hit anything but driver on the non-par threes given the width of the fairways.

Influenced by the old-style courses of Southern California where Tiger Woods grew up, he created a course that brings back the need for strategy. He stated “I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices. Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. I love this kind of golf.”

El Cardonal sits on a broad landscape dotted by cacti, palo verde trees and scrubby desert flora, with dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean, natural arroyos, mature vegetation, native dunes, and where the land drops 240 feet along the mile-long stretch from the 17th tee to the 3rd fairway.

The fairways are wide, with rustic sand traps scattered in the middle of the ideal landing areas. Players have plenty of room to navigate their way around, or over, the hazards, and the short grass gives players plenty of options around the greens.

The north-south direction of the arroyos – the steep-sided gullies formed by fast-flowing water – is entirely a function of the natural topography. They run in the direction that water flows. With the course primarily a resort layout, the design team decided to build the majority of holes on a north-south axis to prevent forced carries across the arroyos, which in many cases are 100 yards or longer, which enhanced playability for holiday golfers.

Update:

With Joel Dahman withdrawing from the event his replacement in our each-way tips will be Taylor Montgomery 66/1 – with LiveScoreBet – who had a Top 10 finish last year and who has been trending in the right direction over his last three starts

My tips to Win:

After a couple of weeks rest which I feel Ludvig Εberg 9/1 – with LiveScoreBet – needed, and coming back to this event with not the strongest field, I feel this could be the week that Ludvig wins his first PGA Tour event

It has been a tough start to the Autumn schedule for Emiliano Grillo 28/1 – with SkyBet – missing the cut in his first two starts, but then managed a Top 10 finish in Japan at the Zozo Championship. Emiliano has teed it up in this event seven time and has four Top 15 finishes, with three of those being Top 10 finishes and I expect him to be back challenging this week

I did tip Beau Hossler 28/1 – with LiveScoreBet – at the Zozo Championship where he had a runner-up finish, which followed on from his seventh-place finish at the Shriners Children’s Open. Beau has played in this event five times and has two missed cuts and has not really challenged in his other three starts, but I think in his current form and playing on a new course this year that may change come Sunday

Each-way tips:

A past champion of this event but over a different course is Matt Kuchar 55/1 – with SpreadEx – who had a Top 10 finish at the Fortinet Championship and then went over to Europe and played in two events and finished in the Top 20 at the Andalucia Masters. Matt should arrive here in confident mood after those results and apart from his win in this event, he has four other Top 25 finishes from his six starts including a Top 5

Outside tip:

Two Top 10 finishes from his three starts on the Autumn schedule should see Troy Merritt 100/1 – with LiveScoreBet – looking forward to teeing it up at El Cardonal at Diamante this week. Troy had a third-place finish in this event last year which followed on from his Top 15 the year before.

Longer odds:

Try Henrik Norlander 125/1 – with LiveScoreBet

As always good luck
