Golf Monthly is the market leading golfing magazine in the UK. It's a lively and welcoming read that is targeted at good golfers who are regular players - and keen to get even better.
With over 100 years of heritage and authority behind it, it represents the real 'voice of golf' with leading columnists, top players and unrivalled coverage of equipment and instruction.
The European Tour stays in Spain but now moves south to Andalucía for the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters which this year tees up at the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior.
This was the first golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones in Europe and opened for play in 1964. The course is located close to the beachfront between the river Guadiaro and Sotogrande marina and has been voted among the top ten golf courses in Europe. "Sotogrande Old", as it is known by locals, features mature vegetation with cork, eucalyptus, pine and giant palm trees enhancing the natural beauty of the surroundings.
As you would expect being Trent Jones’s first design in Europe it is very much an American style golf course, long, tree lined fairways, with penal bunkering with the bunkers being the first in Europe to be filled with brilliant white crushed marble and of course plenty of artificial water hazards.
Another first was the Bermuda grass fairways which are wider than many surrounding courses. The greens are large with narrow entrances and subtle contours and there are lots of teeing options with the tee boxes being extremely long, Trent Jones has made the most of the natural landscape and its arid, rocky outcrops interspersed with olive groves and orchards.
In 2015 a two phased upgrade was undertaken by Roger Rulewich and David Fleury which brought back the original shape and design of the greens which had grown by up to 40% and a sub air system was installed and fairways and tees were also reconstructed.

Three Top 3 finishes in his last four starts including a win and a runner-up should see Ryan Fox 14/1 – with LiveScoreBet – arriving here this week and being the man to beat.
I feel this is a big week for Jordan Smith 25/1 – with UniBet – having put himself in some great positions to win and not taking that step and getting one of those events over the line. It would be more worrying if he was still looking for his first European Tour win, but he has won twice and hopefully when he puts himself back in with a chance to win – hopefully this week, we will see him seal the deal.
It has certainly been a bit of a rollercoaster season for Romain Langasque 33/1 – with UniBet – with a runner-up and several other Top 25 finishes, with three of those coming in his last four starts. Romain fired all four rounds in the 60s at last weeks Open de España and I expect him to arrive here this week in confident mood and be right in the thick of it again come Sunday.
Each-way tips:
This weeks defending champion is Adrian Otaegui 40/1 – with UniBet – and although this weeks event is being held at a new venue, he will be looking to defend his title in style. I did tip Adrian at the weekends Open de España and while he managed a Top 30 finish he never really challenged, but I expect him to this week.
Outside tip:
With two wins already to his name it has been a good year for Pablo Larrazábal 100/1 – with LiveScoreBet – so far, although after his last win back in May he went on to miss five cuts from his next seven starts. Pablo seems to have steadied the ship over his last three starts and managed a Top 20 at the weekend and I am sure that will give him a lot of confidence coming into this week.
It has been a strange first season on the full European Tour for Nick Bachem 100/1 – with UniBet – who notched up his first win back in March and then went on a run of seven missed cuts from his next eight starts. In fact he has been missing cuts every other tournament since and only put two back-to-back finishes together over the last three weeks and then promptly missed the cut again at the weekend. When Nick has made the cut he has had a couple of Top 10 finishes and I think it could be one of those weeks again this week.
