Golf Monthly is the market leading golfing magazine in the UK. It's a lively and welcoming read that is targeted at good golfers who are regular players - and keen to get even better.
With over 100 years of heritage and authority behind it, it represents the real 'voice of golf' with leading columnists, top players and unrivalled coverage of equipment and instruction.
This event in 2020 see the resumption of the PGA Tour during lockdown, the Charles Schwab Challenge will probably always be remembered for that statistic, and of course the stunning Colonial Country Club which the event is played over. The history of CCC is quite interesting as it came about through one man’s crusade to bring bent grass greens to Texas.
That man was Mr Marvin Leonard, who was so intent on bringing bent grass greens to his then golf club, the River Crest GC, that he offered to pay for two or three greens to be dug up and reseeded with bent grass. If the experiment did not work, he would then pay for them to be dug up again and reseeded back to Bermuda grass!
The president of River Crest GC at the time grew so weary of Marvin’s insistence about the greens that he told him "Marvin, if you're so sold on Bentgrass, why don't you go build your own golf course and put them in?" That became Marvin Leonard’s Eureka moment and the idea of the Colonial Golf Club was born.
Mr Leonard then commissioned John Bredemus of Texas and Perry Maxwell of Oklahoma to both submit five alternative course designs but after looking at the designs he asked them to submit five more. From the initial designs Marvin Leonard put together a composite course from which sprang the Colonial Country Club.
By 1935 the golf course and the first clubhouse neared completion and less than 10 years later the Colonial Country Club held its first US Open Championship in 1941. By 1946 the Colonial had its own tournament, ‘The Colonial Invitational’ with the inaugural event being won by none other than Ben Hogan, who retained the title the following year and won the event five times in his career.

No real surprises with my picks to win this week, as I said when tipping Scottie Scheffler 9/2 with LiveScoreBet for the PGA Championship if he gets that flat stick working there will be no stopping him. It is frightening how well he is playing for someone who cant hole a putt at the moment. But strangely enough all picks are the same three that I tipped to win last year!
Not only is Jordan Spieth 14/1 with UniBet a past champion of this event, but he defend his title with one of his three runner-up finishes, he also has five other Top 15 finishes of which four were Top 10s and has only been outside the Top 15 once in his ten starts
Its amazing how one shot can cost you a tournament, but one thing for sure is that Viktor Hovland 16/1 with Bet365 wont let that bunker shot on the 16th affect him and will take a lot of confidence from his performance at the PGA Championship. Hovland has played in this event twice before with two Top 25 finishes, but I expect him to be in the thick of the battle this week
Each-way tips:
Another player that will take a lot of confidence from his performance at Oak Hills at the weekend is Cameron Davis 50/1 with UniBet with his Top 5 finish. Cam also had a sixth-place finish at The Players and a seventh-place finish at the RBC Heritage so his form isnt that surprising. Davis opened up with a first round 66 and had a Top 10 finish here last year and I expect him to challenge again this week
It has been a strange year on the PGA Tour for Min Woo Lee 66/1 with UniBet Top 20 finishes at The Players where he had a sixth-place and the PGA Championship and missing out by a shot of a Top 25 finish at the Honda Classic and four missed cuts including The Masters. Min Woo is a multiple winner on the European Tour and I do expect him to win on the PGA Tour and feel he will do well here this week
Outside tip:
A runner-up and another Top 5 in this event should see Harris English 90/1 with UniBet looking forward to this week. It has certainly been a rollercoaster year for Harris and I just feel being back here where he had a Top 5 finish in his first ever start at Colonial, can help get his season back on track.
