Golf Monthly is the market leading golfing magazine in the UK. It's a lively and welcoming read that is targeted at good golfers who are regular players - and keen to get even better.

The European Tour is back this week and pitches up at Yas Links a new venue for the Abu Dhabi Championship and designed by one of my favourite golf course designers of the modern era Kyle Phillips, you can read my interview with Kyle by clicking here where we talk about the Yas Links project.
Yas Island is a multi-billion dollar project by Aldar and as Kyle told me in that interview the place was just blowing sand before they started and now it has its own mini eco system. Yas Links golf course, opened for play in 2010 and as well as the 18-hole golf course it also has a 9-hole academy course and a floodlit practice area.
This was Kyles first project in the Middle East and he was involved right from the outset when it was decided to shape nearly two miles of coastline, Phillips used almost 2 million cubic metres of the dredged sand to cap the golf course. There are some amazing views and eight of the holes including three of the four short holes 8th, 13th and 17th sit right on the waters edge. The course weighs in at a staggering 7,450 yards and has five teeing options on each hole.
Apart from the stunning par 3s, the 9th is probably the best par 4 where your tee shot has to carry the water on the right, its all risk and reward and the more distance you gain from the tee the shorter your approach shot is to a green. The 18th is a fitting finale to the course with the shoreline snaking along the left hand side of the fairway, with danger lurking all the way from tee to green.
We seem to start every year saying its a big year for Rory McIlroy 7/1 with UniBet but as we move into the eighth year since he last won a major championship which was the PGA Championship in 2014 it is. Of course Rory has won tournaments, winning twice on the PGA Tour last year. But, he himself said major championships are what he judges himself by and with The Masters on the horizon he will want to get the year off to a winning start.
So too will Collin Morikawa 7/1 with BetFred and the advantage Collin has over Rory is that he has already teed it up this year in Hawaii at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, where he shot a final round 62 to finish in the Top 5.
With two Abu Dhabi HSBC titles to his name which were won back-to-back Tommy Fleetwood 22/1 with MansionBet will be looking to add a third this week. Tommy won those titles over the Abu Dhabi GC course and this years event is being played at Yaz Links, but having nurtured his game on the links courses on the Golf Coast of Liverpool, Tommy may just be hoping that the wind comes into play.
Each-way tips:
Another player that has already been competing this year giving him that competitive edge over the field is Erik Van Rooyen 45/1 with Bet365 having played in both of the PGA Tours Hawaii events finishing inside the Top 25 in both although the Tournament of Champions is a limited field. A final round 64 on Sunday should see Erik arrive in confident mood this week.
Having said its a big year for Rory in many ways its an even bigger year for Matt Wallace 66/1 with QuinnBet firstly will he find the right balance between the European and PGA Tours, but secondly we are now moving into the forth year since Matt won three European Tour events in one year. I am sure there has been plenty of work on his golf swing over the winter and hopefully also on channeling his temper and emotions, if he can control those and gets his scheduling right then this could be the year he kicks on again.
Outside tip:
Three runner-up finishes and 2 other Top 10s including a forth place at the US Open Guido Migliozzi 125/1 with 10Bet should be looking forward to this year with a lot of confidence. The backend of last year may not have gone according to plan, but some work over the winter and I feel the Italian will be back challenging again this week.
