John Letters has been handcrafting golf clubs since 1918, and when I unwrapped the package and saw its beautifully designed new Tour Black wedges staring up at me, I must admit to a little excitement creeping in, especially on seeing that they were fitted with a black KBS shaft. Mean is not the word – these babies looked positively ready to show a few flag sticks exactly who is boss.
From the CNC milled grooves, mild steel and black PVD finish, I loved every minute of putting John Letters’ wedge system through its paces over five rounds of competition golf at this year’s Tunisian Festival of Golf. The three wedges covered everything I wanted – from 80 yards in, bunkers, lob shots, pitch and bite, the Tour Blacks coped with all that was thrown at them and came out on top every time, apart from two duff shots, which was actually down to the fella holding the grip…
Technology
The Tour Blacks are forged from a CNC milled 8620 carbon steel, which provide total control and feel. The CNC milled grooves offer all the bite and grip you need to throw the ball at the pin, giving you total confidence in their ability to impart plenty of spin, grip and bite.
The black PVD finish inspires you at address, especially when you look down at the way the wedge sits tight up against the blade’s teardrop design. It fills you with confidence, and on those bright sunny days – remember last summer? – the matt finishes reduces any fear of sun glare at impact.
You are not really looking for extra distance from your wedges, but the KBS helps give you the stability and feel you want. And the matt-black finish only helps top off the mean look of the John Letters wedge system.
The trailing-edge grind design narrows the sole, which helps turf interaction from all types of lie, while the heel grind makes it much easier to open the face for those Phil Mickelson-type lop shots around the green.
Conclusion
I enjoyed every minute of playing with the John Letters Tour Black wedge system, and with today’s balls and drivers you will be surprised at how many times you pull a wedge from your bag. For a fraction of the price of some of the major brands out there, the John Letters Tour Blacks offer you everything you could want from a wedge system. Throw in great looks, feel, spin and control, and I would recommend you put these on your testing list – they will take some beating in this price bracket.
Go and have some fun.
