Because of the worldwide Covid pandemic, this year’s WGC Mexico Championship has been moved to The Concession Golf Club in Florida. The course is named after what is probably known as the “greatest single sporting gesture ever” when Jack Nicklaus conceded Tony Jacklin’s 2-foot putt on the 18th green at Royal Birkdale to tie the Ryder Cup for the first time in its history and if you remember the furore when Tiger Woods conceded to Francesco Molinari in the 2012 miracle of Medinah Ryder Cup matches giving Europe the outright win, well I don’t think we will ever see a gesture in sport like it again.

The Concession Golf Club is set in a 1,200-acre private community on Florida’s Gulf Coast south of Tampa. This is a Jack Nicklaus “Signature” course designed in collaboration with Tony Jacklin and inspired by that moment of golfing history. Tony Jacklin stated “I want the clubhouse full of memorabilia and pictures and reports of the great Ryder Cup games and epics. We want to epitomize the game and the values we love.”

The course itself is a tough test of golf, with rugged bunker shapes that are surrounded by thick native grasses which increase the difficulty factor, while also making them look more natural. The heavily contoured greens are going to put the players putting skills to the test this week with their severe humps and complexes.

The course is surrounded by natural wetland areas where the planting of reeds, weeds and other lake foliage have given the landscape a much more rugged feel, many of the holes are cut through tall pines and oaks and the firm, fast running fairways are down to The Concession GC installing an undersoil fan system.

My tips to Win:

A final round of 66 at the Genesis Invitational see Jon Rahm 10/1 – with WilliamHill – storm up the leaderboard but unfortunately it was never going to be enough as he started the day to far behind, but what it will do is give him plenty of confidence coming into the weekend. It was also good to see Jon follow the play-off round and congratulate the winner. Jon has yet to win on the of the WGC events or a major, but he has won the European Tours Tour Championship and he will be looking to win at least one of them this year.

After a couple of weeks rest and buying a house in Florida Tyrrell Hatton 22/1 – with UniBet – should be raring to go this week and with a three Top 25 from his three starts on the European Tour which includes a win in Abu Dhabi and a sixth-place finish in Saudi, Tyrrell’s golf game is in great shape.

I am going to stick with Viktor Hovland 25/1 – with BetFred – again this week and he came back from his weeks rest after a sixth-place finish in the Saudi International to notch up a Top 5 finish at The Genesis Invitational, in fact it was Viktor’s third Top 5 finish from his last four starts on the PGA Tour which includes his win at the Mayakoba Golf Classic and a runner-up at the Farmers Insurance Open.

My each-way tips:

This week’s defending champion is Patrick Reed 30/1 – with BetFred – who has had a two week break since his last outing which was his win at the Farmers Insurance Open. Patrick’s win in this event last year was of course in Mexico and while The Concession may not be a regular tour stop he will want to put up a good defence of his title this week.

Another Top 5 finish at the weekend for Cameron Smith 60/1 – with UniBet – at The Genesis Invitational which makes it his third on this season’s wraparound season and he has only been outside the Top 25 three times from his nine starts so far. Cameron has already won twice on the PGA Tour and has also won his native PGA Championship back in Australia twice, so the lad knows how to win and with the complex greens this week his putting prowess should see him challenging again this week.

Longer odds:

Try Rasmus Højgaard 150/1 – with UniBet – or Lee Westwood 160/1 – with UniBet

As always good luck
