The PGA Tour heads off to Charlotte North Carolina this week and pitches up at the Quail Hollow Club originally designed by George Cobb in 1961.

The course has undergone a series of improvements and redesigns, including modifications to several holes by Arnold Palmer in 1986 and a redesign by Tom Fazio in 1997. The course measures 7,442-yards, it’s very much a shot shapers course from the tee and around its tree-lined doglegs, the greens are very fast here during the tournament and a premium will be placed on that aspect of the game. 

The changes to the course for last years PGA Championship were a new type of grass called Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda grass has been installed on the greens replacing the bent grass. Thousands of trees have been removed. Lastly there has been a new designed start to the course with the old first and second holes being made into a 540-yard par 4!! A new par 3 second hole and the 11th has seen extra bunkering added. 

The four par-5s are all reachable in two and there are two drivable par-4s at the eighth and fourteenth. The 14th measures 346 yards, a 15-acre lake frames the left side of the hole and the rough on that side slopes down to the water. The narrow landing area measures about 27 yards across and is guarded by two bunkers on each side. The two-tiered green has bunkers guarding the left front and middle of the green, and a collection area waits just off the right front of the green for short approach shots hit off line. 

There should be plenty of birdies and eagles this week but don’t expect the pro’s to tear the course apart, the average winning score here is 12.5 under par.

My tips to Win:

I am sure a smile will break out across the face of Justin Thomas 11/1 – with WilliamHill – as he arrives here this week and his thoughts drift back to his first major championship win when the PGA Championship was held here back in 2017. Justin has already won the Players Championship this year and with the PGA Championship again on the horizon and by his own admission only his putting is letting him down at the moment, I think Thomas will be the man to beat this week.

As most of you may have noticed I haven’t really tipped Rory McIlroy 20/1 – with WilliamHill – for quite a while, but if there was ever a course that he is going to win on then it is Quail Hollow where he set a course record 62 on his way to winning his first PGA Tour title in 2010. He then went on to break his own course record with a 61 on the way to winning his second Wells Fargo Championship in 2015 winning by 7 shots and setting a new tournament record score.

Another European Tour player that could go on to achieve great things in the game is Viktor Hovland 22/1 – with WilliamHill – who has already won twice on the PGA Tour and comes into this week on the back of four Top 5 finishes already this year – two of which were runner-up finishes – his latest coming at the weekends Valspar Championship and I expect him to be in the thick of it again come Sunday.

Each-way tips:

With last years Wells Fargo Championship being cancelled due to the pandemic this weeks defending champion will be 2019 champion Max Homa 35/1 – with BetVictor – who had a sixth place finish at the weekends Valspar Championship. I am sure Max will be disappointed with his final round 74 and not putting up more of a challenge, but with a win already this year at The Genesis Invitational and being the defending champion I am sure he will be in the thick of it again come Sunday.

Another past champion who comes in to this week in great form is Brian Harman 50/1 – with VBet – who won this event back in 2017 when it was held at Eagle Point Golf Club as Quail Hollow was hosting the PGA Championship that year where he had a Top 15 finish. Brian comes into this week having not been outside the Top 15 in his last four starts two of which were Top 5 finishes and I think he is a great each-way bet at these odds.

Outside tip:

Out of his three starts over the Quail Hollow course Francesco Molinari 125/1 – with BetFred – has not been outside the Top 20 having a runner-up at the PGA Championship and two other Top 20 finishes in the Wells Fargo Championship. It has been a bit of hit and miss from Frankie this year so far with three Top 10 finishes from seven starts, which includes two missed cuts. It is hard to tell what form the Italian will be in but if there is a course that he is going to challenge on then I think it will be Quail Hollow, is it and these are great odds.
