| Designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and set in the rugged Sonoran Desert surrounded by the stunning McDowell Mountains, the world famous Stadium Course plays host once again to the Waste Management Phoenix Open, made famous by the 20,000 fans that surround the par 3 16th, where golf meets football and WWF.
Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, probably never dreamed it would become famous throughout the world. "Really it was designed as just a little bridge hole to get to the 17th and 18th," said Weiskopf. "Here is this little par 3 that doesn't seem to be much of a challenge." Morrish said the hole has become a "rallying point for the unduly enthusiastic and sobriety-challenged portion of the gallery."
Some of the professionals competing in this week’s tournament will bring gifts to try and appease the crowd that surround this hole. A tee shot that misses the green or a putt that is left short is greeted by a crescendo of boos, it’s not a hole for the faint hearted.
The 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th are what make this an exciting tournament course. The 17th is a drivable par 4, "Short par 4s are hard to do correctly," Weiskopf said. "If you are going to lay up, I want the players to have the pressure of a tough chip and putt”. So remember while watching this tournament your money isn’t safe until your player has holed out on the 18th.
My tips to Win:
After a week off and recovering from missing the cut in Abu Dhabi Justin Thomas 9/1 with SpreadEx will be looking to put that behind him this week and what better place to do it than playing in an event where he has had two third-place finishes in the last two years.
This weeks defending champion is Webb Simpson 16/1 with BetFair who also has a runner-up and three other Top 10 finishes and has only been outside the Top 20 once since 2010 when hes teed it up at this event. To say Webb enjoys playing here would be an understatement and I expect him to be in the shake up again come Sunday.
Another player that seems to enjoy teeing it up at TPC Scottsdale is Daniel Berger 22/1 with SportingBet who has four Top 15 finishes from his six starts here three of which are Top 10 finishes. Daniel has played in two events this year and has made the Top 10 in both the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the Sony Open in Hawaii and I expect him to be challenging again come Sunday.
Each-way tips:
I know he is going through a tough patch at the moment, but with a win and two runner-up finishes in this event I just think these odds are too good to ignore for Rickie Fowler 50/1 with UniBet Most of you will know Rickie is going through some swing changes at the moment and his putting has started to suffer probably with more attention going into the swing changes, but with his record here that also includes three other Top 15 finishes one of which was a Top 5 I think he is worth a punt.
The WM Phoenix Open is all about the crowds and no one feeds off the gallery more than Bubba Watson 50/1 with UniBet so how much it will affect him this week who knows, but with two runner-up finishes and not being out of the Top 5 in his last two starts here, he will certainly be in a positive mood and expecting to do well this week.
Outside tips:
Byeong Hun An 100/1 with Ladbrokes has teed it up in this event four times and has three Top 20 finishes, two of which are in the Top 10. Byeong hasnt had the greatest of starts to this wraparound season having missed five cuts from his nine starts, but he did have a Top 10 finish two weeks ago at The American Express, which shows sign that he could be turning it around and coming back to TPC Scottsdale and an event he obviously enjoys will only help boost his confidence this week if he gets off to a good start.
Longer odds:
Try Chez Reavie 175/1 with SpreadEx
As always good luck
