If you head for Kohler, you will find a Pete Dye creation that runs along the western edge of Lake Michigan for some two miles, if you didn’t know any better you would have thought this course had been sitting on this site since golf first came to the United States.

The course was the vision of Herbert V Kohler Jnr who transformed a former airfield into one of the most dramatic courses in the US. Pete Dye may not have moved heaven, but his team of bulldozers certainly moved plenty of earth on this money no object creation.

“Mr. Kohler wanted an all-walking course with fescue fairways, and I was very apprehensive,” stated Pete Dye. “There are a handful of courses with fescue in Maine and Long Island, but agronomists will tell you it won’t grow in many places over here.” Fortunately, the banks of Lake Michigan were receptive.

From the grass to the pot bunkers and even the introduction of black sheep give it that true links feel and with the lake breezes and railroad-tie bulkheads used in some of the bunkering help give it that authenticity you really could be in Ireland.




My tips to Win:

There is not decent odds when it comes to the Ryder Cup but can Europe 12/5 – BetFred – pull off a win against all the odds? I don’t think it’s Europe’s strongest team, but we all know how team spirit can carry a group of players to victory. I think what has always worked in Europe’s favour is that most of the guys play football and for a European the number one aim as a kid is to become a professional footballer and you learn that team ethic very young when playing in school teams etc. The unknown this time is how many away fans who are immigrants to the US will turn up. Europe are certainly up against it. Would I back them to pull it off, not with my house the professional punt will always be the US, but a couple of quid to win and a repeat of the Miracle of Medinah, i’d take that.

Best European Player

This will be Sergio Garcia 12/1 – with SportingIndex – tenth Ryder Cup, the Spaniard became Europe's all-time leading points scorer with 25.5 points in Paris 2018. He was unbeaten over the first two days at The K Club in 2006 and in the process became only the second player after Ian Woosnam to win all four points from his foursomes and fourball matches. Sergio is a captains pick this year and he will want to repay that faith that has been put in him.

Another captains pick is The Postman Ian Poulter 12/1 – with BetWay – and again he will want to deliver for Pádraig Harrington for keeping faith with him. Ian has lost just six of the 22 matches and is undefeated in his singles matches. Medinah 2012 Saturday afternoon two down and six to play with partner Rory McIlroy, Poulter produced five consecutive birdies to win the point that would give the team belief they could go on to win. Ian was 3rd on the putting stats for last seasons PGA Tour and had four Top 10 finishes.

Best US player

No surprises that Justin Thomas 13/2 – with BetFred – is the bookies favourite for the US Team, his record in Paris was 4-1-0 winning his singles match against good friend Rory McIlroy and all this in his first Ryder Cup. There's no Captain American – Patrick Reed – this year but in Thomas they certainly do have a more than adequate replacement.

Slightly flying under the radar coming into these matches is Tony Finau 12/1 – with BetVictor – who like Thomas was a rookie in Paris. Although the US team were comprehensively beaten in Le Golf National Tony’s record of 2-1-0 stands out for not being beaten and also beating Tommy Fleetwood by a handsome 6&4. Finau won his second event on the PGA Tour recently and had a Top 10 finish here at the PGA Championship back in 2015 firing all four rounds under par.
