The year that was, The Players Championship marks the start of isolation and no sport for many of us around the world, I am sure many of the players will recall their thoughts as they arrive here this week and like many of us never believed we would still be in the middle of a pandemic as they arrive again this year, although with better news with the vaccine rollout.

The Players is always a great event and Pete Dye’s Stadium course is a fitting venue that doesn’t disappoint. Every year this course throws up drama and none more so than the 17th, plenty has been said about this hole, but there is a true replica at Eagles Eye golf club in Michigan that you can play if you can’t make it to Sawgrass.

The Players now offers the highest prize fund in golf at a staggering $10.5 million with the winner taking a $1.8 million cut of that. The tournament used to be a warm up to the Masters and played in March, but with the move to May as a lead up to the US Open, the course now plays very differently and is much dryer, harder and faster.

In 2006 the course implemented massive changes, they tore up the old course and then brought in 26,600 tons of sand, 2.6 million square feet of Bermuda grass, 116,600 feet of pipe for irrigation, 19 acres of sod for landscaping, 200 new trees made up of oaks, pines and palms, new natural waste areas, lower-level bunkers, greenside chipping areas and water hazards. From a spectators point of view it makes great viewing, the changes are seen as a positive move by both the players and the tour.

My tips to Win:

Not the final round finish Patrick Cantlay 22/1 with BetFair was looking for at the Genesis Invitational, which was his last tournament appearance unlike his final round 61 at The American Express and I am sure he has been working on that in preparation for this weeks event. Patrick shot a first round 67 to make the Top 5 here before the cancellation last year, he also has two Top 25 finishes from his three starts here and I think he could be the man to beat this week.

2018 Players champion Webb Simpson 22/1 with WilliamHill also got off to a good start last year before the cancellation firing an opening round of 68. Webb comes into this week on the back of only being outside of the Top 20 twice from his nine starts on this years wraparound season and while that is a great record and does include four Top 10 finishes he would have wanted to have challenged more after winning twice last year.

I am going to stick with Viktor Holland 25/1 with WilliamHill this week who has already won on this years wraparound season and had two runner-up finishes. Viktor started well at the Arnold Palmer Invitational but his final two rounds of 77 & 78 will be a bit of a wake up call. Viktor is also another player that shot 68 in the opening round last year before the cancellation and I think this course should suit his game.

Each-way tips:

I am also going to stick with Tyrell Hatton 40/1 with SportingBet who recovered from a disastrous opening round 77 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational to to put himself back into contention with rounds of 67 & 66 only to shot another 77 to slide backdown the leaderboard. Tyrell has already won this year on the European Tour and has another sixth-place finish at the Saudi International and I feel he will be in the thick of it come Sunday.

I have to say I think these are great odds for Daniel Berger 40/1 with BetFred who has already won this year at Pebble Beach and has two other Top 10 finishes and should come into this week in buoyant mood. Again Daniel is another player that opened with a 68 here last year before the cancellation so knows he can play well over the TPC Sawgrass track.

Outside Tip:

Another player I am going to stick with this week is Christiaan Bezuidenhout 70/1 with SportingBet after his Top 10 finish at the weekends Arnold Palmer Invitational, not many people will remember this but Christiaan shot a first round 65 here last year and was sitting in the runner-up spot before the tournament was cancelled due to the pandemic. So not only does he come into this week playing well, he will also have lots of positive memories of that first round and know he can score here.

Longer odds:

Try Chris Kirk 150/1 with BetFred

As always good luck
