With the cancelation of the Canadian Open the tour moves back to South Carolina to the Tom Fazio designed Congaree Golf Club which is situated on an historic 18th-century estate, and surrounded by over 2,000 acres of lakes and longleaf pine forests.

The course looks very natural but Fazio did move tons of earth, he also moved and replanted enormous pine trees, some of which are over a century old and introduced forced carries over waste areas too wide fairways and wide greens.

Green surrounds are the course’s biggest defence, tightly mowed run off areas so If you miss the green then you will pay the penalty as getting up and down to make par will be very hard. The turf is firm and fast with whispery fescue framing some of the holes and is also present inside some of these bunkers, which I am sure the tour players are going to hate.

From the tips the course weighs in at 7,685 yards, with a par of 71, comprising of some wonderful par 3s, plenty of risk-reward par fours and testing par fives. The par 4, 8th is the courses signature hole, which is played around two vast waste areas. Congaree has a tough finishing stretch of four par 4s, culminates in a tough approach shot which is played over water and sand to the narrow 18th green.

There are only two members at Congaree which are the founders Dan Friedkin and Bob McNair their mission is to involve influential individuals who become “ambassadors,” making a donation to the Congaree Foundation – a non-profit educational initiative – and supporting the educational, vocational and golf instruction opportunities afforded to underprivileged and deserving young people.

My tips to Win:

The reason I am going to go for Brooks Koepka 9/1 — with 10Bet — this week is because of all the social media attention on his spat with DeChambeau, more than anything Brooks will want to perform well this week just to get one up on Bryson’s performance at the Memorial Tournament. Obviously Koepka is a class player, but I think this sub plot will only add fuel to his performance.

I am not sure if Tyrrell Hatton 16/1 — with VBet — schedule is to save him from himself and self destructing or he likes to pace himself playing two consecutive weeks then taking a rest. Whatever the reason is, it certainly seems to suit his style and no doubt he will turn up this week and be right in the thick of it in one of the final pairings come Sunday afternoon.

He may have missed the last two cuts, but Sung-Jae Im 20/1 — with MansionBet — plays so much golf he just plays his way in and out of form and has amassed nearly $3m along the way this season. With the premium on getting up and down with the roll off areas this week and Sung-Jae excellent wedge play I think he will do well over this course.

Each-way tips:

I did tip Alex Noren 40/1 — with WilliamHill — at last weeks Memorial Tournament and I am sure he will take a lot of positives from his final round 68 that see him finish inside the Top 15 and it was Alex’s fifth Top 25 finish in his last six starts. It has taken Noren a while to start to settle on the PGA Tour, but coming into this week on an unknown course to most of the players in the field and in his current form I think he will fancy his chances this week.

To be honest it wasn’t hard to keep tipping Garrick Higgo 50/1 — UniBet — over his last few events and we certainly done very well out of the South African who had a two wins and a Top 5 from his last four starts on the European Tour. I think playing in this event is a great move for Garrick as its a new course to the regular PGA Tour pros so there won’t be any local knowledge advantage and with his confidence running high I can see him making one of the final pairings come Sunday.

Outside tip:

Another South African player but one who has had a tough few weeks is Erik Van Rooyen 100/1 — with 10Bet — who has missed four cuts from his last four starts on the PGA Tour after having three Top 20 finishes from his previous three starts. It certainly has been a rollercoaster year for Erik, but he is a class player and his game will all click together again and it’s just backing him in the tournament that it does and at these odds on a new course it could just happen this week.
