It’s the start of the play-offs and all the big guns will be out to for the countdown to the Tour Championship and Liberty National Golf Course makes its first appearance since the Presidents Cup matches of 2017 and before that The Barclays back in 2013 and 2009.

Designed by Bob Cupp and Tom Kite in 2006 there can’t be many golf course that use national monuments as sight lines like they do at The Liberty National Golf Course where Lady Liberty serves as a target on many of the approach shots here. Liberty is an extremely challenging layout, playing to more than 7,400 yards from the back tees, with narrow, curving fairways and smallish greens that are hard to hit even on the rare calm day.

The 14th, a 150-yard par 3 along Upper New York Bay is probably one of its more iconic holes. Accuracy from the tee is what is needed here and with the wind whipping in from the Atlantic, this will favour the players who can control their ball flight. Liberty National has a magnificent backdrop of both the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty,which stands less than a 1,000 yards from the 18th green.

My tips to Win:

I am sure Jon Rahm 10/1 – with WilliamHill – will be raring to go after yet another positive COVID test put him out of the Olympic Games. The recently crowned US Open Champion has made the Top 25 in fifteen of his nineteen starts this season with twelve Top 10 finishes, which includes a runner-up and four Top 5 finishes and I think he is the favourite to win the Tour Championship this year.

A Top 20 finish and part of a winning presidents cup team at Liberty National, should see Jordan Spieth 16/1 – with UniBet – arrive with some positive memories of teeing it up here. It’s great to see the Texan back to winning ways and being right in the heat of the battle, apart from his win Spieth has had two runner-up finishes and four other Top 5s.

This will be Bryson DeChambeau 28/1 – with BetVictor – first competitive rounds over the Liberty National course, but there seemed to be a more measured Bryson at the WGC St Jude playing more strategically and only taking the driver when he needed that extra big of power, his final round 74 did see him slide out of contention, but I believe if DeChambeau carries on with this new game plan then you can expect him to be winning more tournaments going forward.

Each-way tips:

Another member of that winning US Presidents Cup team was Daniel Berger 33/1 – with SportingIndex – who will also have lots of positive memories of Liberty National when he arrives here. Daniel has had eight Top 10s from his twenty starts so far this season including his win at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Berger comes into this week on the back of three Top 10s in his last four starts including his fifth place finish at the WGC St Jude.

Webb Simpson 35/1 – with BetVictor – missed out on the six-way play-off at the Wyndham Championship by one shot, but it seemed to confirm that his game is coming back after missing a couple of cuts. Webb had a Top 15 the last time this event was played here when it was known as The Barclays firing a 66 along the way.

Outside tip:

I am going to stick with Kevin Na 110/1 – with OddsChecker – again this week after he just missed out in the play-off at the Wyndham Championship, but what Kevin did show is his putting nerve under pressure holing some crucial putts to keep him in the play-off. Na didn’t play here in 2013, but did compete here in 2009 when he had a Top 25 finish.
