After the long season it has been I must admit I thought there would be more than a one week gap between the Tour Championship and the start of the new season. But, here we are the start of the new 2021/22 wraparound season and kicking off with a new sponsor for the previously named Safeway Open.

There are two courses at Silverado, the North and South, which opened for play in April 1967 when the Silverado Country Club & Resort came into being. The original 18-hole course was redesigned into two 18-hole courses by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, and the North course, which is the track I play, has just been through another redesign, this time by 1976 Open Champion Johnny Miller.

If you have already read my review of Sonoma GC and how that takes course maintenance up another notch from Windsor, then Silverado takes it to a whole new level. I have never seen this many green-keeping staff in one place – and believe me I see them all as I’m first out chasing them round, making it round in two-and-a-half hours. There are at least two if not three or four guys on every hole.

My tips to Win:

I was actually quite surprised that Jon Rahm 4/1 – with BetFred – was competing this week with the Ryder Cup matches being played the following week, but I also understand why not only does he want to keep that competitive edge, but he obviously missed a few weeks out with positive COVID tests. Jon played in this event once before and had a Top 15 finish back in 2017, the 2021 version is a much different player to then and will be the man to beat this week.

I have to say I feel sorry for Kevin Na 22/1 – with SportingIndex – and not being one of Steve Stricker’s Ryder Cup picks as he really was the man in form, with two runner-up finishes a third place at the Tour Championship and a Top 10 at the Northern Trust in the space of six starts. He will be one pissed player and will want to lay a marker down the week before the Ryder Cup commences.

He may have gone under the radar in his first attempts on the PGA Tour, but Will Zalatoris 25/1 – with SpreadEx – announced himself on the 2020/21 wraparound season with a bang with four Top 10 finishes from his first seven starts including his sixth place finish at the US Open. Will went onto have a runner-up at The Masters and a Top 10 at the PGA Championship, although he didn’t make the Tour Championship play-offs and I feel that will be his incentive to get off to a quick start this season.

Each-way tips:

Past champion here Cameron Champ 45/1 – with SportNation – and I think this could be the season that Cameron really shows us the golfer he can be. Champ has quietly gone about notching up three victories in the last three years and put himself in great position going into the final round of the 2020 PGA Championship. His recent win at the 3M Open back in July should give him plenty of confidence starting this new wraparound season and being back here will only bring back positive memories.

Three Top 6s on the spin from invites onto the PGA Tour while playing the Korn Ferry Tour shows that Mito Pereira 70/1 – with UniBet – will hit the ground running now he is a fully paid up member of the PGA Tour. Mito finished off his Korn Ferry Tour career with back-to-back victories and was only out of the Top 10 once in his last six starts, that not only included those wins but also a runner-up finish. This lad knows how to win and it won’t be long before he picks up his first PGA Tour win.

Outside tip:

Another past champion is Brendan Steele 100/1 – with 10Bet – who won this event twice with back-to-back victories defending his title in 2018. Last year may not have been a great year for Brendan but he still managed to rack up five Top 25 finishes and anyone who has won over a course twice will have a lot of positive energy when they arrive at that venue and I think these are great odds

As always good luck
