The DP World Tour now moves to the Gary Player Country Club. The course is one of the major attractions at the once infamous Sun City resort in the north west region of South Africa. Sun City has two golf courses, the Lost City course which features crocodiles in one of its ponds, and the Gary Player Country club which has consistently been rated as the number one or two courses in South Africa.

The fairways consist of a lush kikuyu and are complemented by immaculate bent-grass greens. Designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirkby and named after Player in celebration of his status as South Africa's greatest golfer, this par 72 track measures 7,655 yards from the championship tees. It is one of the longest golf courses in the world.

The Kikuyu-grassed fairways and bent grass greens contrast magnificently with the more barren thorn-scrub and aloe-covered hillsides through which the parkland course meanders. The fairways are wide but are bordered by tough kikuyu rough and untended African bushveld which, together with the tricky greens are the course's main defences.

Water comes into play on five holes, most famously on the par-five 9th with its island green, which is surrounded by waterfalls and artificial rocks. There are natural amphitheatres at the 9th and 18th holes, as well as several other vantage points around the course, giving thousands of spectators great views of the course as well as the players.




My tips to Win:

No surprise that Christiaan Bezuidenhout 13/2 – with SportingBet– has been made favourite this week, Christiaan won over the Gary Player CC course in this event last year firing all four rounds in the 60s and romping home with a five shot cushion. Christiaan is trying to make it on the PGA Tour now, but without too much success his best finish so far has been a seventh-place at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last year. Being back at the Gary Player CC will only bring with it a lot of positive memories and I think he will be in the thick of it come Sunday.

One player that has had an amazing season is Garrick Higgo 14/1 – with UniBet – and I am sure he will want to top it off by winning his national Open Championship. After winning two events on the European Tour, Garrick got an invite to play at the Palmetto Championship at Congaree on the PGA Tour and promptly went on to win and we also tipped him at decent odds that week.

One player that I am sure was disappointed that the Joburg Open was restricted to 36-holes was Shaun Norris 16/1 – with WilliamHill – who was sitting in third spot at the time. Shaun has won twice on the Japan Tour so far this year, one of which was the Japan Open Golf Championship which he won by 4-shots and he will be looking to add his home Open Championship trophy to that one this week.

Each-way tips:

I am going to stick with Brandon Stone 33/1 – with UniBet – after tipping him at the curtailed Joburg Open last week and he is also a past champion of this event. Brandon won earlier this year on The Sunshine tour at the Limpopo Championship which is a co-sanctioned event with the European Challenge Tour. Stone has won four times on the Sunshine Tour and three times on the European Tour and started this year with a runner-up at the Dubai Desert Classic and had a Top 10 at the Qatar Masters before winning in South Africa, and he will be be going all out to win his second national Open Championship.

Another player that would have been disappointed with the Joburg Open being reduced to 36-holes is JC Ritchie 35/1 – with SportingBet – who shot a second round 66 to move into the Top 10. JC has six Sunshine Tour wins with his most recent win coming earlier in the year at the Cape Town Open which is also a co-sanctioned event with the European Challenge Tour. JC had a Top 5 finish at the Gary Player CC the last time the SA Open Championship was held here.

Outside tip:

Lyle Rowe 125/1 – with SportingBet – has won three times on the Sunshine Tour, his latest victory coming at the Blue Label Challenge last month, he’s also had a runner-up and three other Top 6 finishes this season and I feel he would be worth an little each-way punt this week.
